I am concerned that at least one of the teachers at this facility is espousing harmful racist ideologies and is furthering values of white supremacy, because she is insisting despite clear, documented, peer-reviewed evidence that children of the age she is caring for “do not see color until this is taught to them.” From my extensive background in healing all kinds of trauma, including racial and cultural trauma, I can tell you that this is patently false information and that children as young as 6 months can and do notice the differences in race and how Black and brown people are treated as less than, because of this harmful “color blind” method of teaching. I am a mental health counselor and have dedicated my career to helping people unpack this often problematic learning and the associated traumas of not being seen, valued, or educated by their teachers and how that follows them from preschool all through their school careers. If teachers at this facility are not forced to be educated, do better, or retire, I don’t know how anyone could possibly feel comfortable entrusting the care and teaching of their child with people who do not have even a basic, updated grasp on racial disparities, how they are perceived in even the youngest children, and who do not value anti-racism.
