I have used this provider for less than 6 months

I trusted Wonderful Journey Family Childcare with my child, and I respected them as providers. However, the providers at WJFCC did not give me and my family the same respect and consideration. A little over an hour after I picked up my baby on a Monday, Mrs. Abigail (the owner) sent me an e-mail terminating our contract “effective immediately.”

Not understanding the reasoning behind her totally unexpected and sudden decision,  I reached out via phone that evening. She explained that it had been their intention for some time to end our contract. However, by waiting until after the Thanksgiving Break to terminate our contract, not only did she ensure they received payment for two days when the center was closed and they were on vacation, but they also left my family with no time to find alternative daycare options at the beginning of an intense work week.

Ironically, within the week leading up to our termination, two new infants began care at WJFCC. Our family is obviously now in an incredibly difficult position as far as care for our infant, and we feel we are in no way deserving of such a drastic course of action. Because we are working parents and seriously inconvenienced by such a sudden decision, I tried to request either a few weeks of notice to give us time to  find new care or at least reimbursement for the Thanksgiving break days where the center was closed and I provided payment as usual, only for them to abruptly dismiss us the following Monday. But the provider refused both requests. WJFCC acted solely with regard to their own financial interest. They require three months verbal notice and four weeks written notice from parents before a family can terminate enrollment, yet they can instantly terminate enrollment of a family at their discretion.

While on the whole I feel the care and services provided are adequate and affordable compared to other providers in the area, I can’t confirm the provider’s claim that WJFCC always follows state guidelines and ensures child safety. I once found my daughter sleeping in her car seat alone in the living room with a fleece blanket draped over the car seat and, a day or two later, she was waking up from a nap alone in a bouncer in a dark bathroom with the door cracked when I came to pick her up. Following those observations, which took place in September, I politely expressed concern about safe sleeping for my daughter and was told I was being distrusting and doubting the provider’s abilities. I apologized and explained that I was a first time mom who simply needed some reassurance.

On what turned out to be her final day, I found my daughter waking up from a floor nap with red marks and indentations on her face. Curious, I simply asked what she had slept on, and the provider told me that my daughter had been sleeping on a hard toy and she hadn’t noticed. Based on the pleasant conversation that continued afterward—where the provider asked about my Thanksgiving break, told me about hers, and we talked about how fast all of the kids were growing up and so on—I would have never imagined I’d receive a termination email that evening.

Of course, I now recognize that my desire to understand my daughter’s day and also establish open lines of communication with her provider were not well received. In the beginning, I received daily update sheets from the provider. Those stopped coming home at some point, so I then looked forward to occasional updates via text or a brief chat when picking up my child. I appreciate being informed, so we can prepare my daughter, her meals, and her belongings each day accordingly. I also simply enjoy having a good rapport with my child’s care providers. If you are a similar type of parent who likes to be involved and in-the-know about your child’s care, WJFCC may not be the best choice for you. For those parents who have a less collaborative approach to childcare, WJFCC would probably be a great place; you can trust their team to provide quality care, and the kids are happy.

I would like to believe that what has happened to our family is exceptional. Just in case, however, I would recommend having a viable back up plan, so you don’t end up at a loss like us.
