About the Provider

The Hill Preschool, the oldest preschool on Capitol Hill, began as a play group in one family’s home. It was incorporated in 1972 and licensed by the District of Columbia. We have been housed in the Washington City Church of the Brethren since 1979.

Our philosophy is that children learn through play and socialization. Using characteristics of the Creative Curriculum and theme-based instruction, the children are introduced to and experience many aspects of learning. The focus is on the whole child, which means that the children will be given opportunities that allow for growth in all areas of development (social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language).

In the area of social/emotional development, the focus is on a child’s sense of self, responsibility of self and others and pro-social behavior. Cognitive development consists of problem solving, logical thinking, representation and symbolic thinking (how certain objects are used). Physical development encompasses fine motor (small muscles) and gross motor (large muscles) development that will include activities that allow the children to run, jump, skip, hop, etc. as well as perform self-help activities that require the use of hands and to manipulate objects such as tools for writing and scissors.

Language development is key to a child’s success as a learner in many ways. Language is on-going and is infused throughout the entire curriculum. It encompasses not only listening and speaking but also reading and writing.

There is a strong emphasis on language at The Hill Preschool. Teachers can be observed asking open-ended questions and modeling language which enables
children to verbalize a variety of solutions when problem solving. Teachers also model language to express thoughts and feelings in an acceptable manner. A variety of opportunities are provided throughout the day to allow children the opportunity to express their feelings, thoughts and opinions.

During the child’s day at The Hill Preschool, time is scheduled that allow for small and large group activities. During this time, children can be observed singing, participating in fingerplays, music and movement. A small group activity might consist of a craft activity, cooking or a science experiment.
