3 years ago we got a new director for the center and everything has gone WAY uphill! The total feel of the center has changed; we are more of a school family than ever. We use Conscious Discipline in all classrooms and that in itself has made a huge difference. We keep ratios lower than the state requires for most of the day. The teachers have really upped their game as far as curriculum. The children are learning through project work and about things that interest them. There's no way you'll find a better center in the Lowcountry!

I am writing this letter to let the parents of the sweet children that I have had the privilege of teaching and most of all loving them, that it causes me great sadness to tell you that I have resigned from being a teacher at St Luke. It is because of my health that I must do this. because most of you know I take care of my grandchildren and it has become too much for me. I will truly miss the children very much because they were my passion. If you ever need someone to babysit for you I will be available. God bless every one of you!! Jean Hodges

I taught here 10 years ago, I do not recall the name of the director but she was a very young girl in her 20's without any prior experience at running a school, I wish I could recall her name.  She was actively disliked by most of the teachers and for good reason; she was shockingly uncompassionate about the children under her care, as were a few other teachers at that time.  I shall cite a few examples that I personally witnessed.

4 & 5-year olds dropped off in early a.m. stay outside for up to one hour in the playground before school opens.  Temps in the 40's & 50's at 7am the winter I was there, but many parents were dropping off their kids without a jacket or coat.  WE WERE NOT ALLOWED TO GIVE THESE CHILDREN JACKETS FROM THE LOST & FOUND BIN TO PUT ON; they would be cold to the touch, chattering and crying, but I was told specifically by the director that "we can't use those jackets from the lost & found".

A 4-year urinated in his clothes and was not allowed to change "because it was naptime"; he had to sit, wet & embarrassed, for 1-1/2 hours until naptime was over.  I was the assistant helper in the class that day and personally witnessed this incident.  When I told the director, she was unsympathetic and told me, "we always have problems with that kid".

Pitchers of milk are set out on the tables at mealtime, DSS regulations state that any leftover milk be thrown out and not reused.  The director ordered the cook to start pouring the milk back into plastic containers after meals to keep costs down, as the daycare kitchen was on a very noticeably tight budget. I did not hear the director tell this to the cook; the cook told me this herself as we cleaned up after meals and poured the milk back into the plastic containers.

In the 3-year room where I worked afternoons occasionally, some of the children would invariably have to sit in dirty diapers after naptime for periods of up to one hour as there was only one teacher for the 15 - 18 kids in the class.  Diaper rashes occurred frequently because of this; the waiting, hungry children would be crying and fighting in other parts of the room as the lone teacher stood over the changing table for up to an hour.

I gave bathroom breaks for the teacher in the baby room - one teacher per 8 babies was the legal limit.  This meant that babies were not getting changed on a timely basis - a baby would sit in soaking wet or filthy diapers or with burp-up on his face for up to 1/2 hr. as other baby's needs were being attended to.  Babies would be sobbing with hunger, watching as another baby was being fed but would have to "wait their turn" as only one baby at a time was allowed to be fed.

I did not get the feeling at all that "Christ Compassion" was being practiced at SLCC, and when I left, it was with a heart heavy with knowledge of the compassionlessness of those who had the care of helpless children under their authority.

Mark 6:34, because "compassionate acts cannot flow from the hearts of uncompassionate souls"
