St. John’s Learning Center is a quality child care facility conveniently located in downtown Waynesville across from St. John’s Catholic Church. The center boasts wonderful outdoor playground space, spacious classrooms and educated staff. St. John’s philosophy is that each child is different and learns according to his individual abilities. Education is directed by the Creative Curriculum. Children with special needs are welcome and trained staff are available to work with them on site. The center functions much like an extended family and your child will feel at home right away. Visit the center today and experience the care and love that is St. John’s.

A safe indoor and outdoor environment was not provided for the children. It was reported today that children were present during the removal of the cork boards and a cork board was removed while children were nap in the classroom for children four through five years of age. It was reported that a worker from NEO Corporation was observed taking the removed piece of cork board and kicking it with his foot in order to break in half while children were napping. Carpets and curtains were not disposed of after the removal of the cork boards. Proper cleaning procedures were not followed after cork boards were removed. The air venation system was on and operating during the whole remediation process.

Children were not adequately supervised at all times. While driving by the faclity it was observed that one teacher (KM) was sitting on the wooden stage on the playground with her back against the support pole and her legs out in front of her looking down at her phone. She was observed sitting there for twenty-two minutes while children ages two years of age played in the playground area behind her and in front of her. On the upper playground where the group of children ages three through five years of age were playing, one teacher was observed sitting on a table while the other teacher was on her phone while the children played in other areas of the playground not near the teachers.

Children under one year of age were not kept separate from children two years and older. During my walk through of the classrooms it was noted that a teacher's school aged child was being cared for in the classroom for infants and one year old children.

A safe indoor and outdoor environment was not provided for the children. The handrail at the steps children use to get to the large playground area is loose and not secure.

The temperature in a room where infants aged 12 months or younger where sleeping exceeded 75 degrees. During today’s visit the classroom for infants through one year of age was 79 degrees due to the air conditioner system not working. Parents were contacted to come a pickup their infants due to not being able to meet the facility’s Safe Sleep Policy which states that classroom temperatures shall not exceed 75 degrees while children are napping.

All walls and ceilings including doors and windows were not kept clean and in good repair. In classroom for children age three through four years of age in the back of the classroom near the restroom the doorway had places of chipping and peeling paint. In the classroom for children ages four through five year of age there were several areas throughout the classroom in which the paint was peeling off the walls and shelves.
