Description: Welcome to Cross Timbers Elementary School with a growing population of some 1100 students in Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. We begin our twenty-fourth year! We are excited to meet many new friends.
Cross Timbers’s curriculum is designed to develop children’s knowledge and skills in all areas: physical, social, emotional, and intellectual.
Emphasis is placed on helping children learn how to learn and on establishing the foundation and desire for lifelong learning. Different levels of ability, development, and learning styles are expected, accepted, and used to plan the educational program. Students are encouraged to be actively involved in their learning. Students, teachers, and parents create a team to best help each student.
This year we continue our implementation of Everyday Mathematics, a comprehensive Pre-K through 6th grade mathematics curriculum developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. Everyday Mathematics is distinguished by its focus on real-life problem solving, balance between whole-class and self-directed learning, emphasis on communication, facilitation of school-family cooperation, and use of technology.
Our reading curriculum begins with a strong phonics base and expands to include a 50% emphasis on non-fiction materials, as well as 50% emphasis on quality children’s literature. Studies for older students will be divided into 4 thematic modules that will coincide with the calendar quarters. Students will read shorter selections (stories, poetry, and drama) as well as an extended text such as a novel. Modules will culminate with a student projects and writing assignments. Writing will focus on three areas: narrative, opinion, and expository. As students move up grade levels, requirements will increase in length, complexity, and thoughtful reasoning. To build writing fluency, handwriting will be taught at all grade levels.
We are asking you to do your part, too. Please set aside twenty minutes each evening to read with your Cross Timbers student. Younger students may be read to; older students will enjoy reading with you. Reading is one of the most significant tools enabling a child to achieve success in middle school, high school, and as an adult. Help your child become a lifelong learner by becoming a lover of reading.
