About the Provider

Charles House has provided a wide array of youth programs over our entire 95-year history. We offer an asset-based youth development approach in all of our youth services that seek to empower and equip youth with life skills, knowledge and training through various clubs, activities, and programs.

We offer an after-school program at Enrico Fermi School #17 on Orchard Street. Registered with the NYS Office of Children & Family Services with a capacity of 70 children, we serve third through sixth graders. The program combines a variety of activities that help elementary children succeed inside and outside the classroom. Children receive help with homework and literacy development. We provide many enrichment activities including STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), photography, music, dance, sports, nutrition/ cooking, arts and crafts. We partner with Foodlink for the Kids Café meal program and Baden Street Settlement House for supplemental education services.

The Teen Club serves youth from seventh grade until they are age 21. The club serves 50 teens a year, meeting twice a week during the school year. The Teen Outreach Program curriculum is used to promote positive decision making skills. This program is evidence-based and teens in our program have dramatically lower teen pregnancy rates than other youth living in the zip codes we serve. The Teen Club includes college visits, guest speakers, community service projects, audio and video production, dance, music, and arts.

The “Teens Active in Civic Engagement” is our summer youth employment program for 14-15 year olds. This six week program offers teens an opportunity to gain hands-on work experience with a paycheck. The projects are designed to improve the community while teaching the participants important career and job skills.

The THRIVE program is a collaboration with City recreation centers, other neighborhood-based organizations, and the University of Rochester. The Teen Outreach Program and job training lessons are offered to youth attending rec centers. Researchers are studying the effectiveness of the various activities in reducing teen pregnancy. Charles House also collaborates with Hillside for the Reinvesting in Youth program. Youth referred by the Probation Department are connected to case management and services within their neighborhood to prevent the youth from escalating involvement with the judicial system.
