I previously worked for The YMCA and was placed at this site address. The YMCA is the agency who has an agreement with The Latin School/SCSD to provide such child care services inside the building. Therefore, The YMCA is responsible for hiring, training, and providing adequate staffing (ratio guidelines). So its like a cooperative agreement. During my assignment, I found out that we could only use one primary set location with the school (the cafeteria). We could only use one secondary location within the school (the gym). Last I knew, administration was checking with the governing agency_Child Care Solutions, to see if the library could be added as an additional secondary location or third. There were many stipulations as far as space usage during pre/post school hours, restrictions to certain activities involving media (educational movies, computer usage, and such. The YMCA experienced a constant turnover of staff; in which my feedback to administration was always..."We need more qualified people." The YMCA does not provide effective on-going training to equip the staff so that they can perform high in all areas, where as deemed necessary by the governing authority_Child Care Solutions. Unfortunately, none of this was discussed prior to my assignment or within the first month of my employment on site. I was often left to figure things out in which I tried my best to assure that the children and families were happy and that needs were being met...of course keeping safety first. Personally, I think The YMCA should practice attracting more qualified people who has keen interest and a unique skill-set which will encourage and foster the growth and development of these precious little ones. The Latin School, I rate them A1! I hope this helps!
