Description: Small Wonders Family Child Care "To learn and explore with new friends" Small Wonders Family Child Care, located in Lisbon, opened its doors in 1993 as a license exempt child care and became licensed in 2000. Kathy Wright, owner and director, has envisioned a thoughtful, purposeful environment for the children and families at the center. Her ideas became reality this year upon the completion of her newly renovated, custom designed child care space. Small Wonders has a Bartering Payment Assistance Program which allows parents to use their skills within their profession in exchange for child care time for their family. When a parent, (fondly referred to as Mr. Bill) lost his job, Kathy’s family hired him to repair their camper. They were then able to sell the camper and use the money to pay Mr. Bill to do carpentry work at the child care. Mr. Bill gave them a discounted rate for his services. As a result, Mr. Bill’s children, who had been at Small Wonders since infancy, were able to remain at the center, and the Small Wonders environment could become what it is today: custom made cubbies in a large, open welcome area, a room specifically for afterschool children, many built-ins such as a dollhouse with different textures and colors on every level, bench seating, bookshelves, a puzzle shelf, a magic castle, and so much more.
