Description: Our Lady of the Snows School seeks to provide a program that fosters the spiritual, academic, social, and physical development of the individual. We believe it is our responsibility to recognize and develop the unique gifts of each child entrusted to us.
Spiritually, we deepen the awareness of God’s presence by helping our students know Jesus. We believe that by growing in His knowledge and love, they are better able to treat others with Christian kindness. We develop informed Catholics who understand their faith through the teachings of the Gospels. We welcome children of all religions and cultures to our school community, and we reach out to them with understanding and respect. Our school stresses personal responsibility as well as concern for others. Programs and activities throughout the year encourage students to become involved in the loving service of others in need.
Academically, we adhere to the current standards set forth by New York State and the Diocese of Brooklyn. Our faculty strives to keep informed of new trends in education and technology so they can implement them in the classrooms. Our teachers believe that children acquire knowledge in many different ways, so they use various techniques to reach all types of learners. Students are assessed on a regular basis throughout the year so that adjustments can be made when necessary. All these measures ensure that we are successful in providing each child with the opportunity to develop a strong academic foundation. Our students are taught to reason clearly, think critically, and judge wisely.
The physical and social needs of our students are considered throughout the day based on their ages, to insure that we both challenge and attend to these important areas of development. We also have one structured gym period per week per class.
Our vision is the preservation of our strong Christian environment and high academic standards. We will work conscientiously to realize our ideals in a community that is contemporary, enthusiastic, unbiased, and open to the future.
Catholic parents who choose our school for their child’s education have long realized our reputation for excellent academics as well as Faith formation. Since the 90s, our number of non-Catholics has been steadily rising as well, yet our school is still comprised of about 65% Catholic students. Today Our Lady of the Snows school has about 480 students from many diverse cultural backgrounds.
The school offers classes from Nursery/ Pre K to 8th grade. There is morning and afternoon care available for working parents. There are 21 homeroom teachers, a teacher for Reading Resource, Library Skills, Computer Technology, Guidance Counseling, Art, and Spanish. We also have five paraprofessionals serving as aides in our Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten classes. After school programs include the Aquinas Club, the School Band, Student Council, Grade 8 Math enrichment, and TACHS or other State Test preparatory classes. Some teachers also come in early to remediate students who are falling behind.
Since we offer full day Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten classes, and the added benefits for working parents of a before and after school program, many parents enroll their children in OLS.
