Initially, I? loved the idea of the academic structure for the children. However, after the inappropriate interaction between the director and I? it made me see otherwise. To start, my toddler was given a two week notice for screaming in class for 20 minutes. The director calls me during the school day and mentions that my child is being given a two week notice due to classroom disruptions. I immediately go up to the school to discuss the matter on how we could resolve the problem. Let me begin with the director of this program taking me into my child’s classroom in the ear shot of two staff and other children to discuss CONFIDENTIAL information regarding my child’s behavior and his reason of removal from the school. Might I share how disgusted I? was at seeing my 3 year old in time out while the other children in his class were being served lunch and observing this humiliating act. There was no redirection tactics implemented at all. Time out was the best they could do with redirection. When I? challenged the director about my child coming home telling me about the other children using profanity and disrupting the class she told me I? need to mind my business. Prior to this incident my child’s father and I? have been mentioning this issue of children using profanity in the class to staff who mentioned they would look out for these acts. I brought up an event earlier in the year about the director commenting to me that she doesn’t know why my child acts the way he does with a look of disgust on her face. Her response was “Is she not allowed to have a bad day?”. Again, let’s go back to the fact that this discussion is being held in a full classroom of 3 year olds, the teacher, and the cafeteria staff. As an upcoming masters level professional, I? couldn’t believe that she proudly announced has her degree in social work acting as unprofessional as she did. This was completely unethical and against the NASW code of conduct. The benefits of the program is the academic portion. As for the expectations for the toddlers I believe the director has set them way too high for the students. If you are a parent who’s child has an IEP or going through typical 3 year old tantrums don’t expect this program to work with you as the parent or the developing child. According to the director she mentioned to me in front of my child’s father that she and her staff are not skilled nor trained to deal with behaviors. If you choose to register your child into this program please be aware of your child’s day and ask questions. Please advocate for your child. The director is friendly when registering your child. However, she is pretty aloof once you get to know her if she labels your child as a “difficult behavior”. For my parents who have an IEP for your child/ren do not expect the director to participate in meetings with you and staff in order to set reachable goals for your child/ren. I? would never recommend this school to anyone who is looking for a trusting and teamwork based environment.
