Description: Pleas Manley was the son of William Henry and Olivia Senter Manley. He was born on their farm in Grainger County, on August 3, 1874. He graduated from college in Clyde, N.C., and he began his teaching career in Hamblen County. In 1904, he married Ethel Mullins. They were blessed with two daughters, Kathleen Senter Manley and Billy Henry Manley. They made their home with his aunt, Mrs. Dewitt Clinton Senter, widow of Governor Senter. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War and was elected Justice of the Peace on August 2, 1906.
In 1909, Mr. Manley, while beginning to pursue a political career, went to Washington, D.C. for the inauguration of William H. Taft. As a result of injuries he recieved in a tragic streetcar accident, Mr. Manley died. His death was a great loss for his family and the community. Mrs. Senter gave the land, which was part of the Senter farm, to Manley Baptist Church and Manley School as a memorial to him.
Pleas Manley was a Christian who left a legacy of faith and a desire for others to live out their beliefs. He made a lasting contribution to his community, and it is fitting that Manley Baptist Church and Manley Elementary School carry his name.
