About the Provider

Juliette Low School was named after Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. Juliette Gordon Low maintained a lifetime interest in the arts and became a skilled painter and sculptor. She wrote poems and sketched, wrote, and acted in plays. Juliette loved animals, often bringing home stray horses, dogs, and cats. She had many pets of her own and was particularly fond of exotic birds, Georgia mockingbirds, and dogs.

In 1912, Juliette gathered 18 girls together to register the first troop of the Girl Scouts. While facilitating the Girl Scout movement in the United States, Juliette gave girls the opportunity to develop self-reliance and resourcefulness. She encouraged girls to prepare for possible future roles as professional women in fields including the arts, sciences and business. She also prepared them for active citizenship outside the home. Girl Scouts welcomed girls with disabilities at a time when they were excluded from many other activities.

Juliette Low School is one of three in the United States named after Juliette Gordon Low. It was officially dedicated in March 1966, while students were in attendance. The school was built at a cost of $850,000 and was designed to accommodate 700 students. Juliette Low School was the ninth school of the Magnolia School District and, when completed, was the final phase of the District construction program.
