About the Provider
First Roots Wild Roots Essex is a 5 STAR nature based early education program serving 57 children including infants and toddlers (First Roots), and preschool (Wild Roots) classrooms! We honor the developmental needs of each age group, and differentiate our nature exploration, adventures and level of "risky play" appropriately. In infancy, this might be the way the wind blows in the face, the texture of a pinecone, feet in the grass, or a gentle swing feeling both up and down motion to develop proprioception and confidence in how their growing body can move in space. With toddlers, this could look like balancing on an inclined board, spinning on a tire swing, or jumping off logs. And in preschool, this looks like climbing trees, using hammocks safely, sledding with friends, carrying rocks and long dry sumac sticks to a new destination to build a shelter or pounding wildflowers or mulberries in fabric to create a print! We use emergent curriculum and a cycle of inquiry where children derive the questions - and through invitations from teachers - design how to find the answers! We spend the majority of our time outdoors, with seasons as our guide in discovery, adventuring on nearby trails, collecting pollywogs in vernal pools, sledding down our wonderful hills and making sumac sun tea for tea parties. Our multi-age program means that siblings get to visit each other, and everyone feels like they belong. Families can ask to view their class's Floorbook which is a compilation of children's artifacts, photos, emergent writing and the Vermont Learning Standards that align with the activities for learning.First Roots Wild Roots Essex @ 130 Maple St is one of 3 First Roots Wild Roots programs in Vermont, serving a total of 185 children.
