Description: The Family Resource Center (The Center), was incorporated in 1995 through a cooperative effort of Via Christi Hospital formerly Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center, Pittsburg State University and USD 250. These organizations have — since their beginnings — been committed to significantly improving the quality of life of this community.
It was their vision that a center be opened that would provide high quality, affordable child care and preschool services, as well as centralize those services and agencies that are concerned with the needs of children and their families. Organizations can better address the needs of the 21st Century family and shape a brighter, healthier future for our children.
As a not-for-profit organization, The Center is dedicated to meeting the needs of all children regardless of age, sex, race, color, creed, national origin, handicap or economic status. Its staff has been selected for both their professional skills, as well as their sensitivity to the challenges families’ face. Its mission is to create and maintain a safe and caring atmosphere that promotes physical, social, emotional and cognitive growth.
The Center houses a multiplicity of much needed family-related services. Locating all needed services in one facility strengthens the support that many families need to provide an environment that helps develop a healthy child ready to learn. The following services are housed in one readily accessible facility located at 1600 N. Walnut, Pittsburg, Kansas.
• Quality, affordable child care, children birth to 12 years
• Developmentally appropriate preschool, children 3 to 5
• Summer programs for youth
• Comprehensive services for special needs children
• Social and mental health services
• Comprehensive adult education services
• Parent education
• Coordination of existing services
These services are offered through collaboration of existing providers, including Parents as Teachers, SEK Interlocal 637 Early Childhood Special Education Services, SEK Education Service Center-Birth to Three Special Education Services, USD 250 Adult Education Center, Infant Toddler Mental Health, Via Christi Outreach, and Early Childhood Block Grant
The Center merges early childhood efforts and family focused efforts to ensure that agencies in the community are effectively and efficiently offering services that are developmentally appropriate, accessible to all children and families. These services will help parents succeed in their role as their child’s first and most important teacher.
