Description: Literacy is not just about adults. It is about the family that is affected by a person’s Illiteracy. It may be: the person who dropped out of high school before graduation, the immigrant who had an advanced degree in their home country but needs to learn English, the refugee who had no schooling in their country and now needs to learn to speak and read English the person who got their high school diploma but knows their reading and math skills need improvement. Any one of these families could benefit from our program and many have benefitted from family literacy since 1989. ECFL has helped hundreds of parents become full partners in their children’s education by providing: 1)Early Childhood Education, 2) Adult Education, 3) Parent Education, and 4) Parent/child Activities. Eau Claire Family Literacy offers a full range of learning and activities for families participating in the program. When a family joins the Family literacy program, they are not only asked to improve their literacy skills but also focus on other aspects of their family. These involve bringing their children when they are in class so the children can be involved in Early Childhood Education; participating in structured Parent/child Activities; and actively participating in Parent Edcuation. The Eau Claire Family Literacy program is a culturally diverse environment focusing on English Language Learners, GED preparation, GED attainment, Citizenship Skills and technology skills. Not only do we help our students improve their literacy skills but we encourage them to become actively involved in their child’s learning and increase their advocacy for their children.
