About the Provider
Description: East Boston Montessori School is a private, independent school accepting children from 2.9 to 6 years of age. East Boston Montessori School is a member of Montessori Schools of Massachusetts, North America Montessori Teachers Association and is licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care in Massachusetts.
EBMS is a one-room schoolhouse located in the Orient Heights section of East Boston. We are located next to a public playground (Noyes Park) which provides a safe and excellent outdoor green space for our students to play. We are within walking distance from public transportation on the MBTA’s Blue Line newly renovated Orient Heights Station. Our school’s location also provides a drop off area directly in front of the school building for those driving to school.
East Boston Montessori School is a bright classroom providing an exciting environment for learning. Our program’s philosophy begins with a deep respect for each child as a unique individual and a deep concern for each child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. We are a warm and supportive community of students, educators and parents. Our philosophy encourages and teaches children to be kind, respectful and peaceful.
One of the distinguishing features of a Montessori program is its mixed-age grouping of children rather than a class comprised of one age level. Our classroom comprises a group of 29 children mixed in ages from 2.9 to 6 years, where younger children learn from older children and older children reinforce their learning by teaching concepts they have already mastered. This arrangement also mirrors the real world, where individuals work and socialize with people of all ages and dispositions.
Ideally, each child will enjoy a three-year cycle program at EBMS. When children have the opportunity to stay with the same educator for three years, it allows educators to develop close, long-term relationships with their students, allows them to know each child’s learning style very well, and encourages a strong sense of community among the children. With a faculty of three to four educators in the classroom there are ample opportunities for each child to receive attention, guidance and support when necessary.
Operating on the principle of freedom within limits, EBMS inspires children to work at their own pace, alone or with others. Children are encouraged to learn through active engagement with the wide range of materials. There is also much learning by simply watching the work and behavior of others in the classroom. East Boston Montessori’s learning environment fosters independence for even the youngest child. It is our goal to make children independent and be able to do things for themselves. This is achieved by giving children opportunities to move, dress themselves, to make work/play choices and to help with adult tasks. Thus, children have many opportunities to experience the feeling of pride and accomplishment at having completed a task on their own, contributing in self-confidence and positive self-esteem.
