I have used this provider for less than 6 months

am extremely disappointed with our experience at this daycare. From the beginning, communication was a major concern. We often felt dismissed rather than supported, and conversations about our child’s care did not feel like a collaborative partnership between parents and provider.

The most upsetting part of our experience was being dismissed from care effective immediately, leaving our family without childcare and putting our jobs at risk. The way this was handled was incredibly stressful and felt unnecessarily abrupt. We were not given the opportunity to address concerns or work toward a solution before our care was terminated.
The weeks leading up to the dismissal the owner became increasingly obsessive over my parenting, she specifically told me that my child does not listen to me what so ever and there are no consequences for her actions which is inaccurate. On the day of the dismissal the owner was yet again discussing my child’s (very age appropriate) behavior, my child had suffered a large bump on her head that very day while playing with another child, my 3 year old wanted to take the daycare provided ice pack home, when the owner said no my child continued to try to grab it from her hand, I stood nearby with the intention to step in if needed but to allow the daycare provider to assert her dominance in order to send my child the message that she needs to respect and listen to them as well as her parents.
Nothing was discussed related to the (age appropriate) incident and I took my child home, to later find and email that we were dismissed affective immediately because I allowed my child to “hit” her repeatedly without intervening (my child never hit her). I attempted to contact her several times via email, text, and calling to discuss without success.
When discussed later on (only because I went to the daycare myself to discuss and pick up her things) the owner said that the incident “struck a nerve” and she “decided she could not work with me as a parent”.
Throughout our time there, I felt that the owner became overly focused on criticizing my parenting choices rather than supporting my child’s individual needs. She specifically told me that I was decreasing my child’s confidence by carrying her into daycare. I was carrying my child because the daycare was located near a busy road, and I was making what I felt was a reasonable safety decision. Instead of respecting that choice, it was framed as a parenting failure.

The owner also repeatedly suggested that my child needed speech therapy, which felt inappropriate given that she was not our child’s healthcare provider and these concerns were communicated in a way that felt judgmental rather than supportive.

Additionally, I felt that the expectations placed on my 3-year-old were not developmentally appropriate. The expectations seemed more suited for older children, and it often felt as though the owner did not have a strong understanding of what is realistic and age-appropriate behavior for a 3-year-old although she states she has been working with them for 20+ years.

Overall, our experience left us feeling judged, unsupported, and blindsided. Childcare should be a place where families feel respected and where providers work with parents to support children—not a place where parents feel criticized for making a thoughtful decisions for their own child.

Additional Information:

Deborah Marstaller--- I am the owner and full-time caregiver at Cozy Cottage.  My life’s work has been in the areas of early education and working with children with behavioral health needs.  Most recently, I worked for a non-profit organization as a Parent and Personal Safety Educator primarily in the elementary level public school system.  It brings me great joy to foster emotional and cognitive growth in children by designing an environment where they can explore their many talents with nurturing support and guidance.  We love what we do and the children know it!
