Head Start is a comprehensive preschool program for low income children and their families. Head Start provides children, including those with special needs, with services that actively encourage and promote social, emotional, intellectual (school readiness skills), physical growth and development. Head Start fosters good health through well child checks and dental exams, current immunizations, nutrition and lead risk assessments. Parent involvement is one of the cornerstones of the program and parents have many and varied opportunities to participate in their child’s education and development. Support services are available for families including social services, mental health and disability services, and transportation. Head Start receives USDA reimbursement and nutritious meals are provided based on the hours the child attends the center.
EARLY HEAD START is a comprehensive program for low income infants, toddlers, and pregnant women and their families. The same services provided in Head Start are available for infants and toddlers.
Head Start and Early Head Start services are provided in a variety of options:
Center-based part day services, typically 4 hours each day in a Head Start Center
Center-based full day services, for families with child care certificates. Centers open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.. Hours are based on the needs of the parent (working or in school/job training)
Home-based services, teacher visits in the home weekly for intensive parent training and support. Parent and child attend a socialization (group play day) twice a month
All Head Start Centers are licensed by Department of Human Services Day-care Licensing and have a 3 Star Quality rating (the highest quality rating). Staff are highly qualified and well trained.
