Description: Angell Elementary School is one of the oldest elementary schools in Ann Arbor.
The school was built at a cost of $280,000, including the site. The school was originally called South University Elementary School.
"South University Elementary" became "Angell Elementary School" in honor of James B. Angell during the 1920s.
Angell was the longest serving president of the University of Michigan, from 1871-1909.
Forrest G. Averill was the first principal of the school.
The school was initially opened as a combination elementary and junior high school, serving students in grades K-8.
The enrollment area of the school was expanded in 1974 to include University of Michigan family and graduate housing near the North Campus.
The first major renovation occurred under the direction of Elizabeth B. Michael in 1976. Two classrooms were added in 2007.
