When we first enrolled i remember feeling very disrespected by the director because she made and asked some very intrusive comments. I let it pass as just a cultural difference bit over time I saw it was persistent.
Though we did feel the school had plenty of structure we felt as though there was too much structure at times and found the director, Helen, to speak to her staff and parents in a condescending manner. We got the sense that many parents and staff were afraid to speak up about the way the director spoke to them. The school tuition is very expensive but the location was very convenient and in most respects we did feel our child was well taken care of with some exceptions. The environment did feel a bit oppressive, almost as if feedback wasn't welcome. There were some volunteer parent liaisons who I spoke to about this and the general answer we got was that Helen was considering retiring so it wouldn't be an issue for too much longer. We stayed but ultimately decided this was just not the right fit for the aforementioned reasons. I wouldn't say it's an awful place but I would suggest considering what I've written to determine if that would be an issue for you and your family.

About the Provider
CHDS strongly believes that children benefit most from a child centered environment designed to promote interaction with other children and adults, while providing both choice and structure for each child. Following the guidelines of the NAEYC, teachers create a curriculum that considers the age of the children, the individual child and the social and cultural context in which the children live. Children have the opportunity to work in large groups and small groups. Play and learning centers-such as block, drama, manipulatives, library, writing, art, music-enhance the curriculum and allow children ample time to play and work on social development. Routines are an important part of early childhood education and at CHDS routines give children the opportunity to work on their independence, self-help skills and self-esteem. Opportunities to interact and learn from nature are an important component of the CHDS philosophy. Ms. Helen believes that children benefit from daily interactions with nature. The process of planting tomatoes in the garden, observing the plant’s growth and then taking that first juicy bite is a hands on experience that cannot be reproduced outside the natural world. Watching a tadpole transform into a frog or a caterpillar emerge from a chrysalis show children the beauty and wonder of nature. Such interactions, when supported by caring and nurturing adults, have long lasting benefits for young children. The goal of CHDS is to develop and foster a child’s sense of wonder, to encourage his/her natural curiosity and to provide an environment that fosters each child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth. Our school is staffed by professional and dedicated teachers with BA’s and MA’s in early childhood education. At CHDS, respect for the child is priority while he/she learns the concepts of sharing, fairness and respect for others.
