The Academy of Living Literacy

Although The Academy has a fairly positive reputation, I was not impressed. Their curriculum seems to be decently set up but some of their treatment of students is concerning. While touring I witnessed a child that being told that they "had to stop this crying" because they were "to old to cry" & that they were "ruining the fun" for their classmates. As someone with a background in ECE I was startled at this attempt to shame the child into ceasing their emotional display... I also witnessed the director of the program try to force a child, whom was having a tantrum, to stand up by repeatedly picking the child up under their arms and attempting to get them to stand, all while saying nothing to the child. I felt like this was not a gentle way to help a child who is feeling emotional & surely doesn't teach emotional regulation. To some these may seem like things that are "okay", but I wanted to warm parents whom like to take a gentler approach to parenting that this may not be the place for you & your child/children.

This is one of the only facilities in Corpus with certified teachers. However, they treat it as if it were Ft.Knox! You can't get inside at all after 930 and won't allow parents in! This is preschool for crying out loud! I should be able to go in and see my child and take pictures when I want! Not to mention, they have girls working there that are SO rude to the children (and it's their longest standing aide!!!). I'm very disappointed because with such a state of the art program, they are nowhere near the quality of service other providers have. Shame on them!!!

I was very eager for my 3 yo daughter to attend the ALL. I have heard great things about this school. However, she was denied admission for a very mild peanut allergy. I could sit next to her and eat peanut butter. I told the school administrators that she had a epi pen for emergencies, but they would not accept her because they do not administer any meds. This is very concerning. What if a child has a unknown peanut or ant allergy. Would they not administer any meds to the child? I feel they should modify their rules for the protection of all children.
