About the Provider
Winsted Area Child Care Center, Inc. was founded in 1979 by three longtime preschool teachers, Penny Putnam, Ayreslea Denny and Lyn Haskell. These ladies joined forces with some important community members who assisted them in transforming their dream into a reality. In October of that year; with a little elbow grease, Winsted Area Public Day Care opened its doors on the lower level of the Temple Beth Israel at 74 Park Place in Winsted. The site was licensed and soon thereafter became a United Way agency.
The Center grew steadily in enrollment, staff and reputation. In 1986 the Center became one of the first in Connecticut to become accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and has proudly maintained this status to this day.
After the addition of Infants, Toddlers and School-Age programs, the Center changed its name to The Winsted Area Child Care Center, Inc. fondly referred to as WACCC. After many years of fundraising, we moved to our current site in December of 2002 at 185 Prospect Street. In 2005, our Before and After School Education program followed suit and opened a brand new site at 1 Lake Street. Between our two locations, WACCC currently serves children from 6 weeks of age to 12 years. Our license allows us to provide care for 112 infants, toddlers and preschoolers and 74 school-age children. We are proud to provide the children of this community with a high quality of early childhood education.
And the rest as they say is history!
