Description: In 1971 St. John’s created a committee to set up a program of before school care, including breakfast. In addition to Emerson, John Muir and Le Conte Schools were surveyed. With Session approval and $1,200 seed money, a director/lead teacher was employed. With volunteer help and two work-recreation students, the program began with an enrollment of 16 children. The St. John’s 1976 annual report notes that a Child Care Board, which included members of St. John’s as well as parents, and community representatives, was overseeing the program. In that same year an infant care program was begun with funds from the State.
