Description: Special Beginnings Early Learning Center started as Holy Spirit Extended Child Care, at Holy Spirit School in Overland Park, Kansas.
The program was founded by Lynda Connolly in 1987; and was originally licensed for 12 children. In 1989, Mary Hornbeck, Lynda’s daughter, took over the program which then had grown to 24 children. At the same time that Mary took over the program, it became clear that it had outgrown the current available space. Mary worked to find another location.
In May of 1991, Special Beginnings Early Learning Center was opened and licensed for 120 children. Since 1991, Special Beginnings has grown and expanded significantly.
Summer 1996: Camp Special Beginnings begins. Located at the VFW Hall in Lenexa, and serves 60 school age children.
Spring 2000: Special Beginnings Olathe location opens. This location serves 60 children; Infants through Pre-Kindergarten.
Fall 2001: Special Beginnings After School Care opens. This program is now located at the V.F.W. in Lenexa, Kansas and provides quality care and educational programming for 60 children.
Fall 2008: Special Beginnings Cleveland Center opens. Located in the Cleveland Chiropractic College, this location is licensed for 105 children — ages infant to school age.
Together these multiple locations provide education and quality care for over 400 children every day.
