Description: The Normandie Church of Christ was established by the Avalon Boulevard and Compton Avenue congregations. The property was purchased from Southwest Church of Christ for $140,000.
The first worship service was held on August 11, 1963 and 33 placed membership. Carroll Pitts, Jr. was the minister. There were 600 present at the dedication service and Brother M. Norvel Young was the guest speaker. Brother Kenneth Hahn was also in attendance.
During this first year, a two-week Gospel Meeting was held with Carl Baccus, Vanderbilt Lewis, Arthur Perkins, M. Nagai, J. Scott, L. Lymon, O.J. Dyson, R. N. Hogan and Wade Ruby. The first baptisms were August 25. Also the morning Bible class and the Men’s Training class were started.
Normandie adopted the motto: “If it can be done, Christians at Normandie can do it, through Christ (based on Philippians 4:13).” Outreach ministries supported were SwCC and A. L. Cassius (Nassau) for three years.
In 1974 an Education Building was annexed, this building also served to house the Normandie Christian School (NCS), an elementary school.
Normandie has established two scholarship funds. The first fund “The Pamela Pitts Memorial Scholarship Fund” was established as a memorial to the late Pamela Pitts, the daughter of the late Carroll Pitts, Jr. and Bernice Pitts. This scholarship helps students who desire to attend NCS. The second fund “The Carroll Pitts, Jr. Ministerial Scholarship Fund” is to assist those persons interested in the ministry. Donations to either of the funds may be sent to the Normandie Church of Christ’s address.
