About the Provider

Description: A timeline and history of the Evanston School District 65 Early Childhood and Community Based Programs:

1965 Evanston Head Start opens at Foster Center under the directorship of Joseph E. Hill. Program soon expanded to Noyes and Washington Schools. The program started as a summer program.
1971 A committee was formed to establish the 4C's (Community Coordinated Child Care) now known as the Child Care Network of Evanston.
1972 The 4C's collaborated with School District 65 to offer after-school child care. After-school care was offered in five elementary schools.
1973-1974 A second Head Start, operated by Evanston CEDA Neighbors at Work, merged with District 65's Head Start program, providing services for an additional 30 children.
1974 District 65 initiated an after-kindergarten care program for A.M. students. Enrolled students were bused to two schools.
1976 The Early Childhood Center opened at Miller School. This program was the dream of Superintendent Joseph E. Hill. The school hosted five programs: Head Start, after-kindergarten/child care program, Community Child Care, Services for Pre-Primary Age Children (SPPAC), and Family Focus.
1979 The Early Childhood Center moved to Kingsley Elementary School with the exception of the after-kindergarten program. The early childhood program remained at Kingsley until 1990.
1982 Then Superintendent, Dr. Robert Campbell, expanded the after-school program to include before school programming and made it available at all 12 schools. The program was one of the first to operate within a public school system in Illinois.
1990 The program split up with Head Start and Community Child Care moved to Timber Ridge School, SPPAC moved to Park School, Family Focus moved briefly to Oakton School and then to a space in the strip mall at Dempster and Dodge (Family Focus/Our Place - Teen program)
1995 Head Start and Child Care program moved to Haven Middle School
2002 Superintendent, Hardy Murphy, Ph.D., dedicates new education center for early childhood programs (and district administrative offices). District 65's Head Start, Community Preschool/Child Care program, Early Adventures (state pre-k), Pre-Primary diagnostic program (SPPAC) and the Family Center are housed at the Joseph E. Hill Education Center.
