Description: Chico Montessori's two spacious, light-filled classrooms accommodate four classes of 24 students each, plus one morning and afternoon class during summer session. The school has a full kitchen, a nap room, office space and an observation room. Inside the classrooms, counters and sinks, tables and shelves are all sized for children, creating a comfortable working environment that encourages independence. In 2001 the school received a grant from the Butte County Children and Families Commission to create the present playground. In recent years, two raised garden beds have been added where children experience vegetable and flower gardening, and the front garden has been landscaped to include a “crooked mile” of stepping stones that draw children before and after school.

This school has fabulous facilities, but a lot of turnover in staff. Unfortunately, this school has no room for kids who are unique and behave or think outside of the box. The staff is unwilling to work with these kids and will take meticulous notes to document the ways in which the child does not fit in. Once they have labeled your child, they focus on finding all of the ways that your child fits their label and ignore the facts that don t agree with their preconceived notions so that they can show you what a poor match your child is for their school. Sadly, the educators here seem to want to blame their own shortcomings on the children. I'm so glad to have my child out of this toxic environment.
