CONS:
No parental group or encouragement from parents to give input. Staff lacks in parental communication. Staff heard yelling at children when not aware they are being watched. I heard a teacher yell at children (inappropriately) on several occasions when picking up my child. Provider was in a adjoining classroom and was not aware I was there. Staff negatively talk about children. I have seen children get hurt, fight, and approach teachers for help (potty, etc) but are ignored. My child was coming home with injuries with no incident report. High turnover with no introduction to parents (or communication) on who new staff is. Staff tend to socialize more than pay attention to children (especially during pickup and drop off hours). Director is multi-site and is not always on site at specific center making her inaccessible to children, staff, and parents regularly. How can you monitor staff when you are not there? No intercom system for communicating with office staff, if needed, without leaving room. LONG naptime. Clean facility. Free play/center play seems to be the SAME 'stations/toys' every morning and evening - lacks variety. No weekly themes. When asking my child what he did during the day or what he learned/talked about there seems to be little response other than 'playing'. He doesn't come home with anything other than random coloring pictures, no projects or crafts. Parent news letters are infrequent and lacking - should be center as well as assigned room of child specific. No online access to center complaints/ranking/reporting. EXPENSIVE, I pay more in childcare a month than my mortgage! I have seen urine stained sheets on cots laid out BEFORE nap for children to sleep on. PARKING - horrible parking. Across the street from our new library yet no field trips to the library. Only 1 day a year for staff development - lacking. I have seen children crying and others with snot running down their face (apparent it has been there quite a while) not receiving attention. Staff appears stressed and may require another adult to assist with large ratios. Naked children (being tended to by staff (potty accidents, spills, etc) in classroom in sight of other children and random parents - IMO they should be taken to restroom and not exposed in front of 'public'.
PROS:
Educational curriculum follows State. Some teachers actually care and appear to enjoy there jobs and have a genuine concern/love for children (however, few of them). Secure (building code changes 2-3 times a year and after termination of trouble staff/families).
This is my child's last year at the center (he has only been there 2 years). I am grateful he will be leaving but not planning to pull him despite CONS as his overall well being is being cared for and he is one that is favored by staff so he receives care and love I would expect (although I wish ALL the kids received this). I am also a very observant parent who is not afraid to speak up (and I have, and will continue) and feel assured, although seems bored and I have not seen new learning progress since he left Purple room (they were AWESOME btw - his speech, vocabulary, interest in reading, spelling of his name, alphabet, improved. He also came home with several projects and crafts) we are keeping him there as to not uproot him prior to entering Kindergarten and having him at another daycare for a short time. We already have another before and after school provider chosen.
I do think this center has a ton of potential but has some serious overhaul to do with staff, educational requirements, and curriculum development to be worth the money. I would be fine with finding alternate care for a couple days a year for staff development just for this cause. Let's just sum this up by saying that I am grateful this is his last year.
