Description: Founded in 1970 as St. Johns Day Care, Peninsula started out in a church basement with seven children. The founders of Peninsula Children’s Learning Center were so committed to their goal of providing quality, affordable child care that a sliding-scale fee system was in place within a year of the Center’s opening – ensuring that families of all income levels would have access to quality child care and education.
Our mission to provide high quality child care and education as well as family support services to all members of our community demands a high commitment to fundraising and securing partnerships to support our sliding fee scholarship scale, additional financial aid, and to bridge the gap between Oregon Department of Human Services child care tuition reimbursement and our true cost of care. Each year Peninsula awards over $275,000 to families whose children would otherwise not be able to attend our program.
Today, we have the capacity to serve 219 children daily, and annually we average over 250 children served. Our community financed child care center is the heart of our Early Childhood Education Program . Our Before and After School Programs in Sabin and Boise Eliot Elementary Schools serve children ages 6 – 12.
Peninsula Children’s Learning Center is an independent nonprofit organization, overseen by a volunteer board of directors in conjunction with Executive Director Helen Kalk.
