Description: At Oriole Park Elementary School our mission is to create a safe and nurturing environment in which we value learning and respect for others. Through effective teaching and modeling, as well as high expectations for all, our students experience both social and academic success. Guided by masterful teachers, supported by relevant curriculum and nurtured by dedicated families, Oriole Park students will lead the way!
Relationships between staff and students is extremely important at Oriole Park. In order to maintain strong teacher, family, and student relationships we will use a looping approach to education beginning in the fall of 2012. Looping refers to the not-so-new but increasingly common practice of keeping groups of students together for two years with the same teacher. This will allow our teachers to develop a relationship with their students and families. For example, if your child enters a first grade class in the fall he/she will have the same teacher for first and second grades. The teacher “follows” the class up to the next grade.
There are academic and social benefits for both teachers and students using the looping approach. Teachers will have increased knowledge about a child’s intellectual strengths and weaknesses over a two year period and the long term student-teacher relationship is maintained. Being with the same group of students for more than one year results in an emotional climate that encourages risk-taking and student involvement.
Oriole Park has been recognized as a Michigan Exemplary Blue Ribbon School in 2007 and we are on the journey to become a Leader in Me school.
