Description: The Learning and Belonging (LAB) Pre-School has been a part of the University of Montana campus and the larger Missoula community for over 60 years. In October 2009, our program moved into the beautiful new Phyllis J. Washington Education Center where we have a large, open classroom surrounded by windows and doors leading onto a covered porch. Materials and furnishings are arranged in learning centers designed for small groups of children. These centers include block play, art, writing, science and discovery, math, dramatic play, and sensory. In addition, we have a spacious observation room for UM students and a seminar room with the latest in state-of-the-art technology. Some of our unique program features: Small group sizes and an option of either a 3 hour morning or 3 hour afternoon session, Monday - Thursday All children with and without disabilities from the Missoula area are welcome Consistent peer group from one day to the next Advanced education and experience levels of teachers and faculty advisor A productive multi-age learning environment in which children actively explore a variety of materials and activities. We provide materials and play experiences that allow each child to succeed at his/her own level. Opportunities for choice, exploration, social interaction, and problem-solving to enhance children’s natural motivation to learn. Use of positive child guidance techniques that promote children’s ability and motivation for self-control. Demonstration of respect for families by communicating regularly to build mutual understanding and encouraging parents to participate in setting of children’s goals and observation of progress. Active participation of UM Education students who enrich the experience by creating great teacher/child ratios and bringing their own enthusiasm and energy to our classroom.

This preschool is an absolute joke. They preach best practice and emergent learning, all the while never setting boundaries for the children, allowing them to do as they please, and not really teaching them anything academic wise. If you want a babysitter for a few hours this might be the place to take your child. But if you're hoping that your child is taught social emotional skills as well as preparing them for their academic futures, I would suggest just about ANY where else.
