About the Provider

Description: In the early sixties, Maryville City realized the need for another elementary school to serve the eastern part of the city. Several locations were considered potential sites for the new school, but in the end Superintendent J. P. Stewart's selection surprised many people. Located in the far eastern section of the city, the site was considered "a cow pasture out in the country," and "one which no one would come to when it was built." The newspapers even labeled the idea "Maryville's Million Dollar Blunder." Superintendent Stewart however, had the last laugh three years later when a sharp population increase in the area resulted in the Homebuilders Association's annual Parade of Homes being held in the John Sevier Elementary zone.

The land (which includes that of the fire hall, tennis courts, and swimming pool) and the school building cost a total of $1,200,000. When the school was completed in 1968, it was given the name of John Sevier Elementary by the Maryville City Council. The school was built for grades K-6, but the seventh grade was added the second year and retained for three years in order to alleviate the overcrowding at Maryville Junior High School.

In 1977 nine classrooms were added, giving the school plant a total of 75,000 square feet of floor space. No tuition students could be accepted for the years preceding this addition due to lack of space. The cost of the additional construction was close to the same amount of the original building ten years earlier.

Mr. Rollo King became the first principal at John Sevier. Teachers were elected from the two Maryville elementary schools and from Everett Elementary School, which closed the year John Sevier was completed. Kindergarten classes were added in the fourth year and were among the first state supported Kindergartens. In 1985, the 6th grade became a part of the Middle School Program and John Sevier became a K-5 school. In 2012 Coulter Grove Intermediate opened to support grades 4-7.

At the present John Sevier Elementary has 45 teachers, including classroom teachers and those teaching special subjects, teaching grades Pre-K-3. Our student enrollment is about 520 students. All teachers have been trained and implement Quantum learning strategies. These strategies integrate the latest brain-based research into a teacher's curriculum.

Technology at JSE has grown tremendously in the past 5 years. Teachers incorporate technology on a daily basis. Every classroom is equipped with computers, an Interactive board, a projector, and a document camera. We have additional resources available in many classrooms. These include student response systems, Slates, iPod Touches, and iPads. We have worked hard on fundraising efforts to help our school become a leader in technology.

Our philosophy is simple, "Teach to the Child", which means securing their basic needs, providing a safe, nurturing environment, and through formative assessment identify areas of need and strength for each child. It is then that our teachers use their craft to help each student grow.
