I have two children that attend Good Apple. We started care 5.5 years ago when my daughter was 12 weeks old. I love never having to worry about my children when I'm at work. I know they are safe, loved and having fun. They get to spend their days doing art projects, playing in the fabulous backyard and going on numerous field trips. Jan takes lots of pictures so I can see what they have been up to. As a working mom this means so much to me. Good Apple has been a tremendous blessing in our lives.
It is not legal for a licensed child care provider to spank or swat children in their care, whether parents are OK with it or not. Good Apple tries to do a lot of fun outings and provide fun structures for the children on site to play on, but the behavior management strategies are what I should not be overlooked, unfortunately. Ask yourself if this is an appropriate way to handle a common scenario at a childcare and, if you don't see anything wrong with it, then send your child to Good Apple:
A girl hits a boy. The boy cries. The girl is asked why she did it and can't /won't provide a reason, so is put in time out. After time out, the girl is asked how she would like it if the boy hit her to which she replies that she would not care. Up to this point, a very normal scenario, but what follows is what shocked me. The childcare provider tells the boy to hit the girl. The boy refuses, knowing at hitting is wrong. His teacher continues to push him and he continues to refuse, so the worker takes the boy's hand and uses it for him to hit the girl and "show her how it feels." How am I supposed to teach my child that any hitting is wrong when their teacher is forcing a child to hit another in this instance and swatting or spankin for punishment in other instances???? How do I know this is what happened? The teacher herself recanted the story to me at pick up as if nothing was wrong with her actions. I HAVE reported this to their licensing agency, but felt I should write some reviews as well I case parents are thinking of sending their children there.
