(Note: What follows is an early history from the viewpoint of the first ASK director, rather than a review of the ASK program itself.) Today, in 2025, I'm very gratified to see that the ASK program is ongoing after nearly forty years, providing a much-needed and important service to our community and its students. When the After School Kids program first began at LaCenter Elementary School, 'way back in the late 1980s, I worked (sometimes without help with the children, at first), to get it established, licensed and at least minimally supplied. With my four-year-old daughter in tow the first year, I went from teaching mornings at "Miss Anna's Sunshine School," (a private pre-school at the home of Susan Jones in LaCenter), to working after school at ASK. At first, children from Barlow and Bandana elementary schools were bussed to LaCenter, to join the other children in the LaCenter Elementary Cafeteria, which had a well-equipped playground just outside its back doors. Then, with much help and co-operation from the Board of Education, we made the transition when all of our county's six local elementary schools consolidated at the brand-new Ballard County Elementary School. Several children who had been students in the private preschool also joined us at ASK, and to this day, remain special friends. Having graduated from Murray State University with a degree in fine arts, and a Masters in English (although with no teaching certificate), I could offer the children some educational opportunities that were not yet available in elementary schools, help with homework, and supply a limited amount of tutoring (especially after the board hired a student-assistant). ASK offered daily after-school snacks, art projects, free-play outdoors (when the weather allowed) as well as some organized games, and a place for children to rest, relax and quietly socialize (with no TV at school, and no other screens available in those days, of course.) Looking back on those early days, I can visualize some of my very fondest memories of young adulthood. Occasionally, I still enjoy visits from some of the former ASK members at our farm near Bandana, which was also, in those early days, a destination for some ASK field trips.
