Description: When children enter the Y After School program, a whole other world of imagination and growth opens up to them. In addition to supplementing what they have learned in school, they participate in interactive learning models that engage critical thinking skills, get assistance with their homework from trained YMCA staff, have a chance to socialize with each other, and form long-lasting friendships that enhance their development, growth and self-confidence.
Our curriculum is based on a program model that focuses on learning enhancement, health and recreation, and building competence and confidence in children. The program runs every regular school day, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., in a supervised and structured environment, providing a safe after school alternative for children. The staff-to-student ratio is 1:10 and the site capacity can range from 24 to as many as 500 children.
Y After School is offered at low or no cost to parents, thanks to generous support from the NYC Department of Education, NYC Department of Youth & Community Development, federal grants through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers, The After-School Corporation, leading corporations, foundations, individual donors and our Strong Kids Campaign. Y After School programs are offered at more than 140 sites throughout the city, most of which are New York City public elementary and middle schools, serving more than 15,000 girls and boys each year. I find this program to be unfair. My child had been on the waiting list for over a year, however I just received a call after continuously calling them and asking for a status they informed Me that my child once again was not picked for the lotto. I am a single mother and NO family I work 40-50 hours a week and am very disappointed that other people that have no jobs can abuse this system when there are parents like myself that really need that help and have no other options nor can afford the ridiculous amount that child care providers require I know I'm not the only parent with this issue and would love to see someone actually take some action.
