I was employed at Yabi for about six years and had mostly a pleasant experience while taking care of the wonderful children that came there. I was not of the Jewish faith and did not experience any racial issues as described by previous comments. Although the building is older, the teachers and caregivers were creative and loving to the children. My room had the six week olds to about one and half year olds. It was my responsibility as well as my partners to make sure the room was clean and sanitary.
We communicated with the parents on a daily and weekly basis on the progress of their children. We also introduced games and educational imaginative exercises for the children to participate, depending on their age. I learned a great deal about the Jewish holidays and practices while employed there. Overall, I was grateful for the experience.
Linda (Lynn)
I was an employee for 2 years and I left in disgust as I could not handle the contemptuous and racist behavior of the Director, LINDA. Linda did not like anyone who was non Orthodox Jewish, hated the voucher parents, disliked parents with strong personalities, and anyone who did not conform to her way of thinking. For being an Orthodox Jew, she was surprisingly and disturbingly very racist towards her staff members who were very multicultural. Instead of celebrating this diversity in the center, Linda, the Director, displayed racist behavior towards them by criticizing their food as being "stinky food", and commenting that they "needed to eat food like regular people". She displayed very racist behaviour towards the African-American community by assuming that any African American family that came to their door was on an assistance program. She displayed very contemptuous behaviour towards the Jewish families who were on the voucher program, openly lying to them about non-availability of space. She over-charged many parents wrongly and shockingly put the health of all kids at risk once by hiding the fact that Hand-Foot-Mouth was spreading in YABI. She did not report many incidents in fear that it would affect her rating, including once when a teacher dropped a 2-mth baby and the baby cried for 10 minutes straight. This incident was not even reported to the parents, and the staff was intructed to keep quiet. The teacher continued to work there. Many times, kids were forgotten in the playground, or in the gym or left in the hallway. Once a toddler left the room and climbed up the stairs in search of his mother, right under Linda's care, and she had no idea. This toddler could have fallen down the stairs and been hurt very badly. Instead of taking responsbility, she tried to blame a teacher. Another time a teacher was pushing a baby around with her foot - and Linda ignored the complaint against her. Many "Crying", "irritating" babies (in her words) were transported to other rooms and to other teachers without the knowledge of the parents, and brought back to their rooms just before pick-up time. Teacher-child ratios were constantly broken because she was short staffed.
In additions to these compliance issues, the place is filthy as hell and it stinks. It is old and dusty and very unhygienic. During winter the heat does not reach all corners of the building and many rooms are freezing. You can clearly see the babies are blue with the cold.
I can go on and on...But bottom line...stay away from this place. Not only do they charge exorbitantly, they are not worth what you pay and they have plenty of violations which are not reported.
Old, dated building. Most staff is very nurturing but the director and other a few other teachers have less than desirable attitudes. Building smells old and moist. In comparison to the price...I would suggest going some place that is more up to date with not so dated equipment for children to use and learn. At the end of the day it's the child's first start to the rest of their education experience.
