My 3.5 year old just completed her first year in VELA's toddler classroom. And she will not be reurning in the fall. First of all, the campus is extremely large and the director is therefore not as available or accessible as one would hope. In fact, I think I spoke to the director only once all year long! There are at least 10 classrooms total, not including their special needs Sunrise program. Parking is a nightmare and the school is so concerned with liability that it has very strict rules. Like for example, on snow day which was meant to be a family affair, siblings were not allowed to play on the snow. Not the case at my son's old preschool and current elementary school where siblings were always welcome and encouraged to participate in all family events...and we never had to sign release waivers either! In my daughter's toddler program, there was a change in teacher about two months into the school year. We were never given any explanation until I contacted the director to find out why my daughter was having so many tantrums all of a sudden. I was explained that the previous teacher let the kids run wild and that my daughter was reacting to now having a schedule. Obviously we were not happy to hear that our daughter had spent 2 months in that setting especially when we were paying close to $400 each month for what we thought was a quality program. The new teacher did bring structure to the program and I want to believe that this in itself will help our daughter. But we expected more. The teaching staff did little to foster friendships between the children. If kids did not get along, their solution was a "time-out" or to keep the kids apart, instead of teaching them to use words, share, and more importantly play cooperatively. A very different experience than what we had encountered when my son went to preschool at Riviera Hall Lutheran Preschool. Fortunately, my daughter is now old enough to attend RHLP in the fall. And we are very much looking forward to the change. I was reluctant to write this review bc I think VELA did the best they could, but it just came up extremely short in my opinion. I would not recommend this preschool. Sorry VELA!
My daughter has been here for a year. I can't say I love it. It is a bit too big. The warmth and gentleness you would expect for young children seems to be lacking. My daughter has expressed on several occasions that she does not like her teacher and that her teacher scares her. She calls her cranky. She says she is scared of her teacher in the nap room. My daughter likes to put her baby dolls to sleep by patting them on the back and hushing them to sleep. About two weeks after she started at VELA she put her babies down and started yelling at them. She said that's what Miss xyz does. I probably should have moved her then. I am currently looking for another preschool. My second child will not go to this school.
