Last year my son attended Top of the Hill Preschool here in Oakwood. He seemed to have good school and I was never told otherwise. His school year ended May 27th and on June 11th I get a call from the director informing me that he was not welcome to come back to school next year starting this September. We were completely blindsided for starters, the reasons that were given to me for why were that they feel that he needs a full time aide with him 100% of the time he is at school and they do not have the resources to accommodate this. When asked for specific examples they advised that he takes toys away from his friends , and puts toys in is mouth “on purpose” ( he is TWO YEARSOLD). They also said He very recently started pushing his friends ( only one specific example was ever given of this we were NOT told not at the time it occurred only later after asking during this phone call.)
Again , none of these were brought up ever during the school year as a concern to me by any of the staff. Yet, these behaviors are so concerning that he needs a full time aid, yet apparently not concerning enough to have a discussion with his parents. When I asked why I was never told this information or that he was being considered for disenrollment, the director informed me that “due to COVID” communication was hard. They saw me ever single day at pick up , had my phone number, email, and mailing all of which they used to communicate other bits of information to me, so why not this? They had no issue calling me two weeks into the summer to blindside me with this information yet couldn’t pick up the phone when they felt there was a serious issue with my son. In fact, I even have an evaluation from the school, from my son’s teacher, stating that he was ready to move up to the 3’s room this fall.
The director who at one point laughed while telling me this information repeatedly kept saying that they were doing this for my son’s betterment, which is not the case, clearly they just didn’t want a “busy” yet completely normal child (not just my opinion but the opinions of professionals I’ve taken him to see) over the many other kids on the waitlist , too much work I guess? His betterment would have been to be open and honest during the school year with me so we could work towards the best outcome together.
My son really seemed to love his friends and teachers and now is being forced to start over somewhere new for honestly no good reason that I can find to date. The way this school handled everything was completely unprofessional and just plain wrong. My family counts on childcare as we are both working parents Dealing with this was a nightmare trying to find somewhere else for him to start over was not fun. He is since doing very well elsewhere currently, but we will not forget our unfair treatment by this school.
