I have used this provider for less than 6 months

I love this school! They are truly next level in child care. My daughter has been there for only 2 weeks but already has formed a very strong bond with the kind and caring teachers. Her imagination and storytelling abilities have excelled in the two short weeks she has been there. They are a little strict with their current illness policy but that is comforting to me given the current state of affairs.

I have used this provider for less than 6 months

Email below was sent to the head of the school Stacy Knotts detailing what happened to my son in 3 short days. My son is 12 months old in 3 days.

Hello Ms. Stacy,

After the events that transpired the last 3 days, I would like to formally request to see the footage of 7/21 where my son was over-feed several different items in an one hour period. Then laid down where he vomited, to the point of needing to change clothes and me being called in a very disturbing way and told my son was extremely sick vomiting and having diarrhea. Due to the over-feeding of my child, Which you admitted Was staffs but then in the email stated it was imbalanced proportions. Which makes it sound like I didn’t measure his food when I sent in instructions and also a measuring cup and his formula measured out. I even this time wrote on the cereal boldly not to put it directly in the bottle. Which was something that happened before and was documented. When I said my son eats when he is hungry, I didn’t mean to feed him an unmeasured amount of cereal, A Whole can of baby food, unmeasured amounts of water and then 6oz of baby formula all in a hours time. Then after he throws up to get the dramatic phone call to stop at my first day of work to come and pick him up right away. For a mistake made by your teachers. Which lead to me being terminated on my first day of work. The rudeness I have experienced from several staff members From comments like other singles mom do it So you should be able too or being told my son is sick when he isn’t and the observations of seeing a staff member bare foot on the carpet at pick up and entire breast hanging out on a super low cut shirt like I’m at a gentlemen’s club-upon pick up. On top of that his cream for two days now hasn’t been applied I noticed picking him up at the end of day and he was wet yesterday too. The small minor diaper rash he got from swimming has gotten worse since attending your school. After one day there his face broke out as well (he has never broken out before) and I have time stamped photos and videos of my son before coming to school because I wanted to document his first day there. I give clear instructions verbally when I pass my son to the teacher and 2nd through the use of bright wheel every morning when I drop him off. I also leave hand written notes in his blue bag as a third reminder on how to care for my son throughout the day. My son is very well-behaved, he doesn’t even cry much and he is always smiling and happy. Which you have also stated and the teachers. I also informed you that Ms. Mona asked me about his schedule in a rude way/ demanding he have one and that’s when I signal you to come over, you seemed defensive when I told you that and said you heard her but you were four feet away talking. Well, I learned that she is your mother so I can see why you would feel the need to not think that was a big deal now. Although, I feel like personal relationships even if that is your mother should be taken out of the equation. If cameras are outback then then they should be reviewed so that you can see that’s exactly what happened. On top of that you stated she wasn’t his teacher and couldn’t be in the room during the day but I have a time stamped photo that was sent to me and it was between the hours of 2-3. Are guidelines being followed is my concern now. I would like to know who my son was around and his teachers names. All I see is JG and LM in green wheel app. My son was also sent home with a full bottle and a half of one left 7/22. He was under feed for the day if he didn’t even have 3 bottles. In fact when we got home he was crying and literally swallowed his food like a snake. It’s is currently 4:47 am and I have been up all night upset because of this situation. After, careful consideration and a inconvenience to myself and family, I have decided that-The Young School is NOT the appropriate place for my son. Mistakes were made on the schools part and at this time I would like to Urge the committee to investigate what happened in the classroom and I would like to know what happened to my son that day. I would like to see it most importantly and feel I have a right too. Given the circumstances and how this could of really put my son in danger with covid and the CDC if falsely reported. I feel he isn’t being cared for properly and that for the price that your facility charges, I would expect better for my son. He shouldn’t be force feed to the point of throwing up nor should he be given to me with a wet diaper and zero cream while he has a diaper rash. That went from minor to more inflamed. I am extremely unhappy with the treatment my son has gotten and I have gotten. I would like someone from corporate to reach out to me.

I have yet to be contacted by Melody in regards to a refund or corporate about viewing camera footage and have been told she doesn’t have an email and that footage could not be viewed when cameras in place are the main reason I choose this school.

Parent Review Apr 26, 2013

I agree with everything that the above reviewer said. I think that this is a fair and balanced review. However, as a parent I have to rate The Young School, "poor" strictly on the basis of safety. I came to pick up my son today to find him and approximately 5-6 other two and three year old classmates running full speed down an unsecured grass hill that leads directly into the street. Had I not come outside at the exact moment that I did, my three year old son, your three year old son, and your two year old daughter may have very well been in the street with active traffic.

Yes the school is beautiful, and they do some really neat arts, crafts and exploratory learning. However, safety trumps all, and I do not believe that my child or your child is safe at this school. We are withdrawing immediately.

I used to work here, and it is much better than the center I work in now (I quit due to circumstance unrelated to the job itself).  "Teachers" here get paid maybe 25 or 50 cents more per hour than is ordinary for a childcare center, which is enough to prevent a bit of the staff turnover, although that's inevitable in this line of work.

I wish the higher ups, both The Young School management and the designers of the Maryland staff/child ratio laws, could go back and spend a full-time month working in a single classroom, specifically with the twos and preschoolers.  The design of this facility is very pretty, warm, open, stimulating, welcoming ... that's pretty much the reason they can charge so much tuition.  However, spend a day in a staff member's shoes and you will find it impractical.  Classrooms need doors, because young children like to run away ... that's not a classroom management issue, it's a safety precaution.  The Garden Room (the first room you see when you walk in) is a transition room for kids not  quite old enough to go to one of the two-year-old rooms.  The ratio is usually 1:6, which is the two's ratio, and it is often this way even with a few one year olds in the bunch.  Try walking 6 two years olds to the potty, which is not in the classroom, by yourself.  When they all start to run away from you and you are standing at the changing table with a dirty diaper kid who you can't walk away from, and 2 kids have run out of the bathroom and could be anywhere in the center, and the other 3 are standing there flushing the toilets a million times and stuffing them with toilet paper ... you'll realize the situation is impractical.

Other things that are very modern and trendy but are not practical for very young children in same-age, same-stage groups: having craft materials on shelves low enough for children to reach (like a big container of confetti-like stuff with no top and a little kid who'd love to dump it out), a big potted plant in the classroom that can be knocked over by curious kids who also like to eat the soil once they've got it on the ground, a no time out policy ("redirection" sounds very positive, but it only gets you so far), a no line policy (staff may not ask the children to stand in a line), wooden "building" shaped in long cylinder poles in the hands of kids who'd rather swing things at other kids heads than build a castle.

I personally think that the two year old rooms should be slightly larger than the infant rooms, with DOORS, and a potty in the classroom, and a 3:1 staff ratio at most.  They don't need a big room with centers because they are not preschoolers; they need a room with one center and rotating materials.  It would be so much more peaceful, and there would be less injuries.  With the money they're charging you, your kids deserve this.

I think the infant and preschool rooms are pretty decent and slightly more practical.  Again, forget about the novelty of how pretty everything looks, because that's not what matters to a child's development.  I think the preschool rooms could use doors as well, since some of them still run out more than a few times a day.

The staff are fantastic for the most part, SO much better than what they're getting paid.  Like "real" teachers, they have lots of paperwork, even for infants/toddlers/twos, the good ones work at home preparing for the next day's crafts or activities, they go to the library on their own time to get books for the kids, they have meetings twice a week instead of being able to take their full break, and they love your kids.

Anyway, please do not choose this center on a whim unless you're really that rich that you can afford it.  Look carefully and beyond the attractiveness of the place.
