I have used this provider for more than 6 months

Our time with Vine started out great but ended terribly.

I enrolled S (my granddaughter) into The Vine Early Learning, Inc. in Angola about a year ago. She was recently expelled by Vine’s new director, Whitney Collins Welling, without warning or any reason I could ascertain. S’s teacher was shocked. She said she didn’t think she’d ever made an entry regarding behavior into S's file. Nobody at the facility knew what was happening or why.

Vine’s parent handbook details specific steps and tools they expect their caregivers and director to employ before resorting to expulsion. The director didn’t use any of them. She didn’t follow even the most basic directive given; to “communicate with the parents to help the child to limit or eliminate the use of suspension or expulsion”.

She wouldn’t talk to me, said I didn’t have the legal authority to communicate with her (she refused to recognize the legal paperwork in her possession). She also demanded to be given a court order proving S’s parent had legal custody of their children.

When S’s teacher, the lead teacher of the Primary room, asked why S was terminated and expressed disagreement with the decision, the director fired her.*

An additional week's tuition was charged to S’s account and legal action was threatened if it wasn’t paid immediately, even though S wouldn't be there and WAS EXPELLED.

When S’s parent asked for their $150 deposit back, the director replied:

“As outlined in the Parent Handbook, the deposit will be forfeited if no two weeks’ notice is given from parents. The Vine provides a service and is under no contractual obligation to return payment in which you feel entitled.”

A purposeful misrepresentation of Vine’s rules regarding the refundable deposit paid upon enrollment as she was the party discontinuing services.

We tried contacting John Mueller, the board president of Vine and lead pastor of Sonlight Community Church, which Vine is a part of, but he never responded to any of our phone calls or emails.

S *loved* Vine. She loved her teacher, her friends, and their class pet, Buster the guinea pig (the director got rid of Buster, too). I had to find a way to explain to her why she suddenly won’t be going back to school or see her friends and teacher anymore. She brings them up in conversation all the time.

In the end, the director never divulged why she expelled S. She also ignored requests for the contents of S’s school file (something the handbook claims is “always available to parents/guardians”).

Think twice before you trust this place, this -person-, with your child. It's my opinion she should not be in a position governing children.

_______________
*That teacher was very well-educated, well trained, even tempered, and amazing with the kids. She was a great asset and lucky catch for Vine. Finding people to work in a daycare is always difficult, Vine’s never going to get someone of that caliber again, especially in today’s candidate-driven market.
