About the Provider

48 children this year have the opportunity of this State Licensed Preschool. 100% of the children enrolled are extremely low income, 61 % speak a language other than English in their homes, and many families live in crisis. Typically, these are the children who would not attend an early educational enrichment program. Preschool gives children an important advantage in starting Kindergarten ready to learn. For children in areas where violence is prevalent and parents have limited education, it is often not an option. That is not the case at St. Mary’s Center. Families in the West Oakland know the advantage this preschool gives their children. Focused on the specific needs of these 3—5 year olds, the Preschool staff and volunteers use a play based model to engage children in motor skill development, learning and the art of sharing. The large bright room is set up so children can explore at their own pace. A listening center helps children when English is not their first language, there is a reading corner, a play house, art, books and cubbies. Outside a new play structure, bike path, swings and garden space encourage exercise, good nutrition and hands on learning. A large covered area makes it possible for outside play even when it is raining!Preschool studies note that many low income children start Kindergarten already at a deficit. Those with a positive preschool experience are more likely to graduate from high school, less likely to be incarcerated and have a better chance at being successful. Here, parents and children feel a special attention. Parents learn about community resources and ways to be involved in their child’s education. And the children get an important start on their education and success!
