I have used this provider for more than 6 months

My youngest daughter has been with Sam and Abes since she was a baby. She is almost ready to transition to the preschool room. I am noticing that she is sounding out letter sounds, counting to 25+, singing, and identifies complex colors like maroon and aqua. These milestones are quite remarkable for 2 1/2 years. I love that her cute little knees are dirty from outside play. She loves going to "school" to see her friends and teachers. Good job ladies!

I have used this provider for more than 6 months

Teachers are constantly on cell phones, even while holding infants, or "supervising" children. The fence to the playground is set back away from the building, so a child could run out. Children are left alone for short periods of time, while a teacher leaves a room. Children are out of sight of the teachers at times when it's free time. During this time they have access to bathrooms The kitchen gate is never locked, so always accessible to all children. Teachers lose their tempers and yell quite often. I almost feel scared to leave my child there. There are numerous correction orders issued by the state.

Disheartened Apr 09, 2016
I have used this provider for more than 6 months

Most of the teachers at this center are very caring and genuinely seem to like their jobs. That is the only positive about it. They also dress very inappropriately and are constantly on their cell phones. There is no dress code or work shirt for employees to wear. The director is very difficult to communicate with, literally shrugs off concerns, goes against her word, and flat out refuses to communicate with parents after they raise a concern to her. I've never seen any so-called professional behave this way. This same behavior is also evident in her interactions with the teachers/staff members, and it affects the care being provided. The owners do not work at the center and typically do not ensure that the director is running things appropriately. It is a shame, because it could be a great place with the proper management. We will be pulling our child out as soon as we find new arrangements.

The teachers at this facility quite often yell at the children. And I do mean YELL. One time a child was yanking on a teacher's shirt, and she yelled at the kid to stop pulling on her shirt, she's told him a hundred times. It was really loud, kind of whiny-ish. Another time a kid was trying to take a toy away from another, and the teacher yelled at the kid to knock it off, leave him alone. Meanwhile, she stood there and supervised the other kids. They often yell at a child to Stop! Come here, now! Quit it! They aren't calm about it, at all. They don't walk over to the child and redirect in any way, just yell. This is daily, and non-stop. Not all the teachers are that way, but there are at least 3 that I can think of that just yell. Also, a lot of times teachers are on their cell phones. One time I was waiting for my daily sheets from the infant room, and I had to wait for her to stop texting, while she was holding a baby, sitting in the chair to get my sheets for me.

Disappointed Jan 29, 2015

This center told us many wonderful things to expect when we bring our child to them... unfortunately they have not at all lived up to their word. There are so many things to list as to why we have chosen to take our child elsewhere. On a positive note we did really enjoy his classroom teacher as she was very friendly and seemed to enjoy her work. The reasons we left were due to the lack of attention toward children and the uncleanliness of the center. The facility is extremely dusty which can cause an issue for children with allergies. The cleaning is left up to the staff who probably did not get a college education to clean. They need nightly cleaners to come in and not have staff do it "occasionally". My child was ALWAYS sick, I get that germs are everywhere at daycare but before going to this center he was rarely sick and since leaving he has been much healthier too. The staff is consistently on their phone, both the director and the classroom teachers. If there is more than one teacher in a room they sit and talk and face each other rather than face and interact with the children. Kids are always by themselves, no interaction with the teachers whatsoever. They pride themselves on being a "learning and development center" rather than a daycare but there is no learning taking place. I was told by the director, Emily, that my child would work on signing, this was not the case and a teacher even told me they don't sign. The staff has a terrible turnaround. They are always hiring and replacing teachers that leave. Consistency is EXTREMELY important to children! They do not salt the sidewalks and it is extremely dangerous to carry a child on a slippery surface. There are many things that this center needs to figure out to be successful. I urge you to give this center time to figure things out before bring your child(ren) there.

Pros: They offer part time care in an area where most centers do not. There were a couple of teachers that we met and liked. However, I believe the lead teacher position changed at least twice in the short amount of time that we had our child attend and the lack of continuity in caretakers can be hard on children.

Cons: In our experience, there was very poor communication between the director and teachers on what was actually happening in the classroom. There were a couple of occasions where the director told us one thing and we(my husband and I) walked in and saw something completely different. We were not at all comfortable with the discrepancy that we saw there. The director was also difficult to communicate with. She seemed defensive and dismissive at times. Granted, we likely had more frequent concerns than the average parent, due to our child having food allergies. (That being said, we did need to cross check information a number of times when we continued to receive inaccurate information on the 'daily sheets' regarding meals and snacks.) However, regardless of the number of concerns a parent has, one should never be made to feel bad or disregarded, over bringing up legitimate concerns on the well being of their child.

It's unfortunate, because our tour of the daycare had us really excited, but we ended up receiving a completely different experience than what we were expecting and what we felt the director had initially presented us with. Enough occurrences added up, to make us aware that this was not a good place for our child to be and we are so glad to have moved on from there.
