Riverdale Community School

The Riverdale Community School has served the Riverdale, Kingsbridge, and Inwood neighborhoods since 1978. We are a small private nursery school with an enrollment of 20 children and a staff of four. We are licensed by the New York City Department of Health. For more than 30 years, we have provided young children with a secure, nurturing, family-style learning environment.

Activities are planned to give our children an opportunity to express themselves through art, music and drama, as well as daily discussions to develop their language skills. In our well-equipped schoolroom and our private outdoor play area, our children are encouraged to develop their coordination and large motor skills with puzzles, block building , outdoor activities and exercise. Our curriculum includes field trips and nature study to enhance our children’s understanding and awareness of the world around them.

Our staff is professional. Our teachers are certified in Early Childhood Education and CPR. Although academic work is an integral part of our day, our school and staff firmly believe in emphasizing group socialization skills. Our school strives to build within each child a strong and positive self-image. One that gives them the confidence to function happily and successfully in any group situation.

Our school opens at 7:30 a.m. each morning. Children arriving between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. can bring breakfast. Our daily activities begin at 9:30 a.m. Our pre-school program for children 18months to 2 years old stresses art, music, literature, drama, cooking and dance. Our pre-kindergarten program, in addition, introduces children 3 and 4 years old to basic concepts, readiness skills and writing. Units include colors, shapes, number and letter recognition. Our daily activities end at 4:00p.m. Children can remain at school after 4:00p.m. for snacks and a free playtime. School closes at 5:30p.m. each evening. The Riverdale Community School is open 5 days a week Monday through Friday. We close for a limited number of holidays during the school year from September to June. We offer an eight week summer program during July and August.

Tuition is paid on a weekly basis. A registration fee of $50 and a deposit of one week’s tuition is required to reserve a place for your child. Enrollment is open. Your child may join our school anytime during the year provided space is available. Part time attendance is also an option.
