My son attended Kiddos Cove for eight months. Originally I was impressed with the organization of the facility, and the friendliness of the staff and one of the owners .
However; as the months went on we received more and more incident reports in regards to my sons behavior. We were very open to feedback and suggestions as we understood that he does display a level of hyperactivity . It seemed as though as we worked together things were improving as I was receiving positive feedback from the husband ( the owners are husband and wife) .
Approximately six weeks ago I was brought into the office where the wife had prepared a plan for my son . Again we received the feedback and we were forthcoming with our plans for our son and what steps we were taking to continue his positive growth and development.
Over the course of the next three weeks I received almost daily notifications stating that my son “was involved in an incident .” These would include not participating and playing with blocks “ and even “twirling.” During this time I was asked if I considered testing him for ADHD . He is three years old , and even limited research would show you that it is rare and difficult to diagnose a three year old with ADHD . Because I openly discussed his activity level , I expressed that he needs children’s melatonin to rest at night and the response I receive was “ maybe you can give a little bit to him in the morning before you drop him off.” While this was said in jest I found it highly inappropriate and it made me extremely uncomfortable.
While we understand that he needs to participate in class and encourage him to listen to direction , it was clear that everything he did was a write up and they weren’t very interested in nurturing this relationship.
Three weeks after the plan was put into place , I was pulled aside by the owner/director at drop off in front of both my three year old son as well as staff and other parents where my sons behavior was discussed and I was simultaneously given a letter notifying me that he has 14 days to demonstrate an improvement . I was exceptionally stunned and embarrassed so I didn’t say much but I knew instantaneously that this relationship would not flourish and my son would not develop there.
I began touring other facilities where I was very open with what we are working on with him and what there strategies are for children with hyperactivity/high sensory level qualities .
During this time I began to do some research of Kiddos Cove where I found that they had a recent DCF complaint filed against them. I was able to speak with the parent who filed the complaint , and their child came back with bruising in which Kiddos Cove was not willing to investigate. This was December 2021.
I than proceeded to ask the owner for video footage of my son as I wanted to see what his daily behaviors were. I did have to ask myself why as a family do we have wonderful weekends together and why when he is with other children socially we do not have the issues that Kiddos Cove was expressing. The response that I received when asked for the footage was that they don’t record and the feed is only live. This I already knew after speaking with the mother who filed the DCF complaint but I wanted to confirm. Kiddos Cove’s suggestion to me was to give me copies of the written incident reports.
I found that exceptionally discouraging. That a facility can label your child , but have no proof . They have one side of their story , but the most vulnerable has no voice .
I than told Bianka at Kiddos Cove that we would be removing our son. At that time Bianka tried to convince me not to remove my son. She even tried convince me that my son was not being terminated from the program and wanted to provide me with resources so that we could work together. I expressed to her that the letter that was provided to me only gave us 14 days to correct his behavior , and if they truly wanted to work with us they would have had to understand that this would be a journey ( In the three weeks prior to the letter I was able to establish him into tae kwon do and get him scheduled with a physician who specializes in behavior modification ) , and I needed reliable childcare and We no longer felt that this was the place that would nurture his development as it was clear that he was nothing but a burden to them. Bianka’s response was to continue to try to encourage me , and tell me that my son was welcome at their facility and they understood he wouldn’t have a full turnaround in 14 days .
I was convinced that this relationship would not flourish , and provided them with formal notice to remove him.
After I provided notice, I was asked by Enrique why I was removing him , and even where I was taking him to .
Following provided notice I received an incident report for the next three days where he was than formally terminated from the program . It was stated that he was “aggressive “ and a “safety hazard”.. however the husband quote said “ at least he is not aggressive”
I understand what this review may look like as I questioned on whether to write it , but as a parent I need to be an advocate . Children are not suppose to be put in one square box … kids are all different and have different challenges , and should not be made to feel like something is wrong with them . Childcare providers should be educated on how to handle children with more challenging qualities but also demonstrate compassion and patience .
I am very excited for my sons new journey and watching him grow and develop into a lovely little man , but if you are a parent who has a child that you are working with this isn’t the place for you as they are not equipped nor experienced enough to fully assist nor demonstrate any form of compassion or care.
Policies and procedures are a necessity in a business , but when dealing with kids and families kindness and warmness will get you much farther .
Don’t take your kids here!!!!! My daughter was only here for 2 weeks and started coming home with finger mark bruises on her arms and inner thigh and bruises on her butt cheek. She also had a really bad bruise on her shin that went from her knee all the way down. Nothing was documented and the owners told me these types of bruises are normal in daycare. This is NOT normal!!!
My kids love it here. They enjoy all the fun learning activities they do in their classrooms. What I like the most is that it’s a safe nurturing environment and the staff is always professional and super nice. It doesn’t hurt that they have good prices too!
