Description: Highland Elementary School Pre Kinder – 6th grade School is located at 430 Venice Way, Inglewood, California 90302. It is situated in the north section of Inglewood. The surrounding neighborhood consists of apartment buildings as well as some single/multi-family dwellings in the Community. Rogers Park is within walking distance of the school, and they offer great after school programs to Highland students. The Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is approximately four miles southwest of Highland Elementary School . The 405 Freeway is approximately two miles south of the school.
Highland Elementary School prepares children for lifelong success through a challenging academic program and activities that build students’ self-esteem and respect for cultural diversity. For two consecutive years, Highland students have met and surpassed the growth target set for them by the State of California on the Academic Performance Index—meaning that they are up to the academic challenge!
Highland features an extremely active Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in which parents play an important role in their children’s education. In March of 2006, Highland’s PTA led the charge to get fathers more involved in Inglewood schools. As a result, 32 men came out to read to Highland children for the school’s Read Across America celebration, in addition to the many men who read aloud in schools throughout the district. Highland parents also participate in school leadership committees and parent education classes on campus.
Highland offers an after-school enrichment program with educational tutoring, visual and performing arts, field trips, and robotics classes. Other programs and activities available to Highland students include Peer Mediators, choir, and Jump Start preschool. Students visit the school library and computer lab on a regular basis. Partnerships with local businesses and organizations help to provide additional resources and activities for Highland students.
In the future, the Highland school community can look forward to the construction of a 2-story, 28-classroom building, which will begin in 2006 as a part of the district’s Measure K program.
