About the Provider

Description: Happy Hollow is a small, privately owned school, where children don't get "lost in the crowd". Our staff / child ratios are small to allow for individual attention and a closer bond and relationship with each child and family. We have been successfully educating young children for 30 years, with the majority of our preschool graduates being in the gifted and talented programs in their respective elementary schools. We continue to provide support for our graduates as they become members of our after school program in elementary school. Our school has served the community as a training facility for area colleges and provides training for teachers with workshops and instructional guides.

First I would like to say that as a military spouse I have had numerous dealings with many different "learning centers" and NONE of them ever taught my kids anything. Happy Hollow is different. My son actually LEARNS there. Yes, the director is strict, but that is something that was lacking at MANY places I have used before. She is more like a grandmother to each and every child that comes in that door. She expects them to treat each other and themselves with respect. She holds them to their promises and she keeps hers. Everything comes from love and she loves each child like her own. My son loves her. He is excited to go to "school" each day and he tells me all about his day when I pick him up. There is structure and routine and lots of learning and love at Happy Hollow. I am so blessed to have found this wonderful place for my son to spend his days. He has been there for two years now - preschool and Pre-K - and I KNOW that he has learned so much more than just his ABCs and 123s. He has learned that everyone is important and that you should treat others as you want to be treated. Learning is important, but so is teaching a love of learning. That is what my son has received at Happy Hollow. Character is also something that is important at this school. The kids are told why they should treat others with care and generosity and actually understand.

Let me tell you about a typical day as I see it. I drop my son off in the morning with his backpack and he says goodbye as he goes in the door. Then he hangs up his backpack (by himself!) and he puts his lunchbox away (by himself!). Doing these things independently goes a long way to building confidence in a child. they know that Mom and Dad or teacher can do these things for them, but when a teacher - who they have come to respect - tells them that she knows they can do it without any help that means a lot to a small child. Self-assurance is built every day by these little things. This was tough for me when my son first started going there because I saw him as "my baby", but the Director supports the children in such a way that they don't feel overwhelmed by their newfound responsibility and helps them each day until they feel completely confident in their skills.

The "centers" as they are called are structured in such a way that they focus on where the child is developmentally - not just their age and where they "should be". If they are not at age level that is okay and it is not pointed out. they are simply grouped together by their development and they work on the skills that they need to work on by playing educational games and working side by side with their peers. Not only does this help the children that need to build the skill it also helps those that have almost mastered it. Knowing that they can "teach" their friend how to do something they just learned is yet another way that Happy Hollow helps to build a confident and independent child.

At the end of each week the parents are sent home a "bus folder" that shows the work they have done for the week. It is easy to see the progression in my son's learning. When he first started going to Happy Hollow he could barely count to 10. Now he can write his entire alphabet, his FULL name, knows his address and phone number, knows his numbers up to 40 (we are working on that one). Not only has he progressed tremendously in an academic sense, but I also see the confident and happy child that he is truly come out in him. He tells me "I want to learn how to do that" when I make his dinner. He has the self assurance to know that he can do some things on his own; something I know he could never learn in a larger "learning center".

Happy Hollow preschool has been the best thing to happen to my child and I am so glad that I was able to enroll him in this wonderful establishment. The Director truly cares about each child and is invested in their futures. How could you ask for anything more?
