I have used this provider for more than 6 months
My daughter is finishing her 3-year cycle at GMM in June this year, but I am convinced GMM will still be part of our family for many more years to come!!! We absolutely love, love, love this school, its teachers/directors and assistants! They are so dedicated, nurturing, available to talk to the parents anytime and have truly the well being of the kids first in mind! My daughter was a very sensitive little lady when she started school, and the transition from the tiny family day care that she attended full-time the first 3 years of her life to a 3 full-day of preschool alternated with 2 full days at the family day care was challenging. After barely 2 or 3 weeks, the teachers offered us to bring our daughter to school every mornings, and every afternoon, one of their staff could bring her to the family day care ( which is close by ). Doing the same routine everyday, bringing consistency so our little 3-and-a-half-year old knew what to expect would probably greatly help with the transition.... and What a difference it made!! Knowing this, she was SO excited to go to school. After 5 months, she was going full time. They truly care. They have a lot of experience with kids and it shows! We will be forever grateful for helping us this way. They accommodate as much as possible the needs of the kids ( food intolerance, naps...). They teach them invaluable lessons like how to communicate with each other in a respectful way, share and deal with their feelings, how to take care of their peers and environment. The mixed age group has worked wonders on my daughter. She used to be motivated by seeing the older kids, and now, being the older kid, she helps the younger ones. She learned how to be patient and respect differences. She has gained so much confidence and leadership over the years, in a nice way, we are truly blown away. The teachers allow her to make special presentations on subjects that are of interest to her. She has also learned how to read, count, think for herself, be curious about the world and the different cultures, about space, nature.... She learned how to sing in Spanish, Hindi, practice yoga, sew, cook, garden, take piano lessons, tie her shoes, broom the floor... ( we receive pictures of our kids in action!) All of this is possible, thanks to those wonderful teachers and peaceful and playful environment that promotes a simple joy of learning! I would LOVE to go back to school, to THIS school!!! Thank you again so much GMM!!!
I have several young children and over the past 5 years we've attended preschools throughout Southeastern Connecticut -- we love GMM. This is a 5 star Montessori-based program. The directors/teachers are wonderful, kind, loving and attentive. The environment is warm, with a special attention being paid to keeping the classroom safe and secure, so that the children can do their best with their work.
In my opinion, in seeing several other area programs is that this program is ideal - it's the Montessori philosophy with a focus on diversity and multiculturalism. The kids have exposure to different cultures, languages, arts, food, music, etc. And of course, with the children's work they will learn about numbers/math, letters/reading, and science, in addition to many other things. The children learn about grace (really!) and manners too - which carries over to the home. The physical school space in lovely too, with lots of natural light and pretty wooded grounds. One of the best schools in the area!
I am surprised about the one previous review, I can only guess that it wasn't a good school/student match which I sure happens from time to time. The Montessori style is different from traditional play-based childcare/preschool. Read up on it, and sit in for a bit in the classroom to get a true sense of what it's like. Groton Multicultural Montessori is structured yet comfortable and has an open communication style. PS: They have comprehensive daily safety and security procedures in place. A great preschool!
I have known the GMM educators for 4 years and they have been involved in the education of my 3 children. Being an educator myself with high standards and expectations for my children's education. I can honestly say that I am thankful for the fantastic job Lavanya and Ellie do for the children. They strive to provide a peaceful environment for children to thrive (and sometimes they have to make difficult decisions to preserve the learning environment of the school). They have prepared my oldest children not only academically but also emotionally to succeed, and they have helped all my children to develop a curiosity for the world around them and respect for others. The multicultural aspect of the classroom accentuated by parental involvement (parents from different cultures always have a chance to bring a taste of their geography, history and culture into the classroom) enrich the children's experience beyon what any other Montessori program can. I am thoroughly thankful for what GMM does!
We are thoroughly disappointed with the experience we had endured during the short amount of time our children were with Groton Montessori. My boys started on Jan. 2nd and on the 28th of that same month the teachers met with me to tell me that they didn't feel like my oldest son was a good fit for Montessori. After all, he never used his inside voice, he ran in the hallways, he ran in the classroom, he hit on a couple of occasions, and he put a screwdriver in the guinea pig's cage (although they avoided the question when my husband asked how he got access for the screwdriver in the first place). He's 4 years old. They said that it had been a whole 30 days that they have been working with my son and they supposedly couldn't get through to him. Again, they told me this on Jan. 28th. He and his brother's first day of school was Jan. 2nd. Plus, TWO of those weeks they were out of school because they were sick with the flu virus. So, they were there for a much shorter period of time before they decided to sit down with me about us finding another place for our son. My husband also spoke with them on another occasion and suspects that they took on way too many kids than the state requires, or just more than they could handle, and decided to beck off someone who was new and needed time to adjust to new rules. They also shared with me that they had inspection coming up too..hmm..They had to of known that most likely his brother would be leaving after that meeting too.
The teachers at Groton Montessori are very intolerant and are quick to blame the child and parent(s) while never owning their faults in the process. For example, they complained about my son escaping the classroom, but when another child did the same thing, they didn't even know it happened because both ladies were talking to each other instead of paying attention to what was going on around them. Yet, they had the nerve to complain about my child leaving the classroom and make it seem like it was the problem of all problems. They also have a classroom of 2-5 year old kids and don't keep a lock on the door.
Unless your child is really 'cookie cutter like', this is not a place I would recommend anyone wasting their time and money on. The whole situation we dealt with was very devastating and nearly cost me my college education with having to make very sudden change of arrangements. Today is Feb.23rd, nearly a month later, and my son stays home with a babysitter. She is perplexed by this as well because she says, other then the back talking, he is a very easy going child. We are still in the process of finding another daycare/preschool for both of our sons.
