Connect, Seek Advice, Share Knowledge
My wife and I are a parent of a child who just turn 4 years in May 2022. Here is our experience with Chesterbrook Academy Preschool. Our goal is to speak the truth and share our experience. We are in no way trying to influence your decision-making of whether this institution is a good fit for your child or not. For some of you reading this review might view it as odd! But for others, it might seem to be a familiar pattern.
Our son started daycare when he was a year old. On March 2020, due to Covid-19 pandemic and like most parents, we withdrew our son from daycare. We homeschool him until 2022 when we decided that he should go back to school. On February 2022, we visited Chersterbrook Academy and meet with the Assistant Principal Laura Ward. During my initial meeting, my wife and I explained to Laura that our son has been out of school since the Covid-19 pandemic -roughly 2yrs, Laura assured us that most of the kids currently enrolling are in the same situation as us and that we shouldn’t worry. We ultimately decided that we wanted our son to start school there in the summer June 2022 to prepare him for the start of VPK in August 2022. So essential he is starting 7 weeks early prior to fall opening.
Our son is above average and can read/understand a good amount of first and second grade lesson materials. He is an extrovert and will approach and talk to anyone, and like most toddlers who were isolated during the Covid-19 pandemic, he was energetic and excited to go to school. Most toddlers who spend a great amount of time home due to Covid-19 pandemic needed to reorient themselves to the classroom environment as they have been home for so long, our son was no exception, we knew that, that is why we wanted him to start school in the summer to orient and prep him for the start of the school year in August 2022.
On June 17, 2022 we received an email from Chesterbrook Academy informing us that our son starts school on June 20, 2022. We had been keeping our son informed on when he starts school so on the morning of June 20, when our son woke up and first time he said was, “am I going to school” He was excited just like we were for him. We arrive at the school around 7:30am and check him into his classroom. He was supper excited to see other kids all in one place and like toddlers his age need time to process the new environment and learn the classroom rules. But that is not what happen.
At around 8:40am, my wife received a call from the school Principal, Jami Melnick whom we had talk too briefly during the morning drop-off. She said our son has a behavior problem and if he doesn’t change she will have to have us come get him. Here is what the Jami said to my wife.
- She said our son is not listening/following rules
- Our son touched other kids food during snack time
My wife and I were both surprised our son will in anyway act or do the things the Jami is saying. At around 9:40am, Jami. M called my wife again and ask her to come pick up our son. We went to pick up our son and to find out exactly what had happen. The principal was on the phone when we arrived, so we spoke to Laura, she had an incident report prepared different from what the Jami mentioned on the phone to my wife and ask for us to sign which I did. They don’t have any recordings of the incidents. I asked Laura the main reason why they want us to come pick up our son, her response was “because our son left the classroom” which was not listed on the incident report. She also mentioned our son has a short attention span and stated that Chesterbrook Academy can recommend a psychologist who can assist him.
I hadn’t fully processed/digest what she was saying but my wife who is a healthcare professional did. She later told me what Laura was insinuating our son has ADHD.
So let me highlight key points:
- My son was at Chesterbrook Acadamy for ONLY 2 hours.
- The Assistant Principle diagnose my son as having ADHD. Chesterbrook Academy as part of their admission process require medical evaluation be completed and signed by a Healthcare Provider and they have my son’s medical report and should know my son doesn’t have an ADHD.
At 4 years old, we knew our son will be distracted, active and impulsive, that is what preschoolers do. We also know that institutions like Chesterbrook Academy is the place where kids can develop skills they need to success in school and their lives outside of the school environment (social, emotional communication skills, environmental awareness and role of people in it). I don’t know if our experience is unique or emblematic of how Pre-Schools operates but this experience have changed my outlook of race.
After this incident, I did reach out to my white friends to share my experience, they were very blunt, Chesterbrook Academy does not want your child in their school. I hope my experience is helpful to those of you looking for a place for your child. We were promise a phone call will be coming from the Principal but it never came.
