Last week I came to JumpCity's Facebook page in regards to myself and others not being able to file our 2019 taxes. While I was expressing my concerns about Shakarri's inability to provide W2's, track employee's hours, provide paystubs, and turn in proper paperwork to the IRS, I was able to also leave several comments about what I had experience working for her. Recently, I have noticed that all comments disclosing Shakarri's impudent behavior towards her employees and innocent children have been removed.
I am back today to uncover the sickening truths about this woman once again. I am hoping to help those who have fallen victim to her actions, those who have children in her care with NO IDEA of what goes on behind the scenes, and for those considering to place their children at JumpCity.
I would like to start by saying that I had worked for Shakarri from January 2018- March 2019. In the beginning everything was great. Shakarri was helping me to build skills and knowledge regarding the childcare industry, she was helping me obtain my CDA, finding ways to help build my credit, and even getting to know me on a personal level and trying to help with the many difficult situations I was facing at the time. I guess that's why it hurts and bothers me so much how she went from being an angel to the most selfish person I have ever crossed paths with. Leaving her center, I have realized that this woman truly knows and masters the abilities to fake kindness, empathy, and love for others only to get what she wants in the end.
I am going to bullet point the inappropriate behavior this lady has done to keep this review as short and to the point as possible.
-Staff was very much overworked and unappreciated. While I was working there the infant room had 7 babies to 1 teacher, toddlers (my room) had 13 kids to myself, preschool and pre-k were combined together resulting in 20+ children to 1 teacher.... A mother who had an infant attending stopped me one morning with deep concerns regarding the ratio in her sons room. She asked "is the teacher receiving any help or is a second teacher in the room with her?" Me being raised my whole life to never lie answered truthfully and said "no she doesn't, but we are trying hard to hire more teachers to properly meet ratios". When Shakarri found out what I had said, I got reprimanded in front of the children for not sending that mother to her. (we all know if I were to have done that, Shakarri would have orchestrated some type of lie to tell).
-Within the first couple months of me starting, I had witnessed Shakarri hurting children. The same 2 boys and 1 little girl would get off of their cots during nap time and run around. This day, Shakarri had forced one of the boys back onto his cot and while he was laying on his back, she pushed his legs all the way behind his head for about a minute. When she left the room the little boy crawled into a ball crying so bad he could barely breathe. I held him and told him everything was okay and that I was sorry.
-One of my close friends (previous employee at JumpCity) went back not too long ago to take pictures of Shakarri's center for the JumpCity website. While she was there, she was explaining to me that Shakarri and the assistant director were yelling so rudely at the children, dragging them by their arms, and only allowing certain children in pictures. My friend went on to explain that the preschool teacher, assistant director, and Shakarri were not allowing one somalian girl into any pictures because her hair was "too crazy". They went on to make fun of this little girl and laugh at her.
-We used a payroll app to keep track of all hours worked and our paystubs. Unfortunately, this feature only lasted from Jan 2018-October 2018. Once she went away with this app, there were no more paystubs or direct deposits. We had to keep track of all hours we worked by writing them down on paper, adding them together, then Shakarri would multiply it by what we made, and write that on a check. This means no taxes taken out and no records of payroll numbers (hence why we do not have our 2019 tax returns). There was a time Shakarri tried to short me on my worked hours resulting in my check being short $54. When I brought this to her attention she gave me an attitude but did write an additional check giving back the $54. I had deposited that into my bank account and 3 days later it was taken out due to being written from an account with insufficient funds. Do you understand the process I had to continue going through after this just to get my money?
-There were many time we were told to save children's styrofoam cups from breakfast and reuse them for lunch and snack because we were "on a budget". We were "on a budget" but Shakarri and her family were taking trips to Virginia Beach and Florida. Bitten up, smelly, stained with food cups were what your children were drinking out of. We went through many paper towel rolls due to spills and cleaning BUT we had to make sure that 1 roll lasted the whole week. Never ask for another one because we knew we would get an attitude! I have witnessed Shakarri serving the children moldy bread and small portions of food for mealtimes. I can attach pictures below.
-Any good reviews you see on this Facebook page were written either by her family or in exchange for discounts on families tuition's. No one gives true, sincere reviews.
-One time I was told that I had to inform a mother she could not bring her son to daycare in his Jordan's because they were "too nice for daycare". Keep in mind, Shakarri would bring her son in Timberlands, converse, etc. I never told the mother she could not bring her son in those shoes because it was absolutely ridiculous!
The list continues to go on but for the sake of this review I will end it here. For a while now I have been hesitant to expose this center because of what I have seen Shakarri do to those who voice their truths and experiences. Now as an assistant director of a childcare, I will not continue to sit back and keep quiet. I do expect her, her mother, and whoever else to come at me once I post this but I no longer care.
When I had began at my new center, Shakarri was calling and trying to get a hold of my boss because "she had questions". All I know now is that it was only to be petty and tell lies to probably ruin what I had going for myself. Please DO YOUR RESEARCH AND ASK QUESTIONS. Children are innocent and as Shakarri's mother has mentioned "were given to us to love, protect, and educate". So my question is, why do you treat them so poorly?

I have used this provider for less than 6 months

Jump City Childcare is so much more than just a daycare. My son has been enrolled for about three months and has learned so much from the dedicated teachers and staff. The toddler room curriculum is much like a preschool program and leaves confident that my child will go into Kindergarten at an advanced level because of this wonderful program. Thank you Jump City for all that you do for my son Sebastian.

I have used this provider for more than 6 months

I would strongly urge people to stay away from Jump City. Yes, the cost is lower than compared to most other centers in the area, but like most things, you get what you pay for.
We loved them when we started 9 months ago. However, the last few weeks have been filled with nothing but chaos, pettiness, & my children asking daily to go to a different school. There is no worse stress than wondering if your children are being properly cared for. If I can save someone else the heartache and stress that we have gone through, I am going to do it.
Security: The entry to the center has a single code for entry. This code has only been changed once since we started, not randomly as we were told. However, unless you physically pull the door shut, it will not latch and lock, rendering the code useless. Not only can this cause kids to get out into the parking lot, but it can also allow for outsiders to come in. One afternoon, during pickup, a strange man with no children attending the center entered when the door was not latched. The mother who I was with immediately let the director know, however the door still has not been fixed.
Food: I’ve witnessed mornings where “breakfast” consisted of a golf ball size glob of plain oatmeal & half a slice of plain white bread. No fruit, no protein. I’ve seen “lunch” consist of a tiny portion of pasta, with almost no sauce, 4 saltine crackers, & ½ banana. No vegetable and again no protein. When I questioned the portions & the quality of items given the teachers looked embarrassed & responded, “I’m sorry. That is what we were given to serve”. At center events, my husband & I witnessed improper handling of the food being served. This caused concern for my husband who is a chef and ServSafe trained.
Ratios: I have witnessed them being over state mandated ratios & would not be surprised if it was a common occurrence. I called their attention to it one day, when there were 10 toddlers to 1 teacher (8:1 is max) and was snapped at by the admin saying they “are well aware of their ratios”.
Childcare: During the Valentine’s Day celebration my husband witnessed a staff member grab a child by the arm & yank him hard, pulling him out of the room. My own son has complained about the same staff member & started crying when I said she would be taking over his class when his teacher left. He was scared, started to cry & said “Mommy, I don’t like her! She is mean!”
Staff Treatment: In the last 60 days, multiple teachers have left & gone to other center; including the lead toddler, pre-school and pre-k teachers. This doesn’t include the aids that have come & gone faster than I could even learn their names. Yes, turnover happens but when lead teachers who are well loved leave suddenly you cannot help but question. I inquired from the staff & they shared with me some of the happenings regarding staff management, including a new staff handbook that made them all uncomfortable.
I have also witnessed a teacher, who was visibly not well, working with the infants. When I asked why she didn’t go home, she said because she was told by management that she couldn’t because they didn’t have the coverage to meet ratios if she left.
Additionally, I was informed that teachers are no longer allowed to text parents. All communication must now go through the director or her admin. When we first started it was encouraged as a way to promote the “family atmosphere” and “open communication”. It is unfortunate this communication is now prevented. I believe that it was put into place after teachers started sharing what was happening with parents and parents started finding other care options as a result.
Miscellaneous
-I was happy that the center has several toilets for the children, as opposed to the single toilet most centers have in each room. However, I learned that one of the toilets in the toddler room, the main potty training room, has been broken for several months.
-Some mornings the rooms are so cold in the mornings the kids keep their coats on until it warms up.
-There is a $25 fine per child if you drop off after 10am, as all children are to be there by then. I just always thought this odd; like what they don’t want parents to see.
-I needed to change my son one day before we left the center, since he had pooped and not yet been changed, I found a puddle of bleach on the changing mat. That bleach was then all of over my son and his clothes.
-We were told to provide a binder to be used for regular parent teacher conferences, for all of the child’s paperwork and assessments. Conferences have never been scheduled, except when the director insisted that the pre-school teacher offered to meet with parents her last day. Parents were given less than 24 hour notice of this option and most timeslots were during the workday.

Honestly…I could go on and on. The director seems really sweet amazing, but the second you question her, the true personality comes out. After I gave notice that we were leaving, she wouldn’t look at me and would only speak to me when she had to. I ended up pulling the boys out early because once we paid the tuition for the week, I noticed the attitude got worse and started to worry if it would be carried over to my boys.
